Sapporo Clock Tower
A small white American-style clock tower, famous in Japan largely for being underwhelming — and genuinely interesting once you know why it is here.
A running joke, and a real artefact
The Clock Tower is a wooden building from 1878, put up as a drill hall for Sapporo Agricultural College when Hokkaido was being colonised with American technical advice — which is why it looks like a New England meeting house rather than anything Japanese. Its clock, installed in 1881, has run ever since. It is also routinely listed among Japan’s most disappointing sights, because it is small and hemmed in by office blocks. The museum inside, about the American colonisation of Hokkaido, is the reason to go in.
