The middle of the Hakone loop
Lake Ashi fills part of the caldera left by an eruption around three thousand years ago, and it is the point where the Hakone circuit changes from mountain to water. The boats that cross it are, for no defensible reason, replica pirate ships — which is either the best or the worst thing about Hakone depending on your temperament. What makes the crossing worth making is the view back: on a clear cold morning Fuji sits directly behind the lake, with the Hakone Shrine torii standing in the water in front of it.
