No photography inside, a film you can only see here, and tickets that must be won on release day. The Ghibli Museum is deliberately hard to visit.
Small, strange and strictly limited
Miyazaki designed this museum himself and the instruction on the ticket is to "lose your way together" — there is no set route, the staircases double back, and photography is forbidden indoors so that people look rather than photograph. It is small, and that is deliberate: entry is capped, tickets are date and time specific, and they are released on a fixed schedule about a month ahead and sell out in minutes. The short film in the basement cinema changes periodically and is shown nowhere else in the world.

What is inside
Three floors, a rooftop and a cinema, and none of it is arranged in an obvious order.

Getting to Mitaka
West of the centre, in a park, and pleasant to walk to.

- Mitaka station on the JR Chuo line, about 20 minutes from Shinjuku
- Kichijoji station is an alternative, about 15 minutes’ walk
🚶 On arrival
- A 15-minute walk through Inokashira Park from Mitaka
- A community bus runs the same route

- Released monthly on a fixed date for the following month
- Passport name checks on entry — tickets are not transferable
When to go
Entry is capped, so it is never crowded once you are in. The difficulty is getting in at all.
