Tokyo National Museum
The largest collection of Japanese art in the world, and the swords alone justify the ticket. Most visitors give it an hour and should give it three.
A hundred and twenty thousand objects
Founded in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum holds around 120,000 items and is the oldest and largest museum in Japan. The Honkan building covers Japanese art chronologically — swords, armour, ceramics, screens, Buddhist sculpture — and is the part to prioritise if you only have a couple of hours. The Toyokan next door covers the rest of Asia, and the Horyuji Treasures building holds seventh-century objects from the temple at Nara in a Taniguchi building that is worth entering for the architecture alone.

What to prioritise
Five buildings, and a first visit should not attempt all of them.

- The sword gallery is the single strongest room in the museum

- Asian art beyond Japan — Chinese bronzes, Korean ceramics, Gandharan sculpture
🕯 Horyuji Treasures
- Seventh-century objects from Nara in a Yoshio Taniguchi building
- Quiet, dark and the most atmospheric space on the site
Getting there
At the northern end of Ueno Park.

- Ueno station, Park exit, then a 10-minute walk through the park
- Uguisudani is slightly closer to the museum gate

- Bought at the gate; special exhibitions are charged separately
When to visit
Indoors and year-round, with one important closure.

- Closed Mondays, and over the New Year period
🕘 Hour
- Weekday mornings from opening are the quietest
- Late opening on some evenings — check the calendar
🌸 Season
- The garden behind the Honkan opens only in spring and autumn
Visitor intelligence
The commonest mistake here is underestimating the scale.
⏱ Pace
- Honkan alone is two hours at a walk
- Trying to see all five buildings in one visit does not work
