The tower Tokyo is fond of

Tokyo Tower went up in 1958, thirteen metres taller than the Eiffel Tower it was modelled on, partly built from steel recycled out of American tanks left after the Korean War. It was the tallest structure in Japan until Skytree overtook it, and it has aged into something Skytree is not: a landmark people are sentimental about. The view from the top is good rather than exceptional. The tower itself, lit orange at night above the Minato rooftops, is the better photograph — and it is free to look at.

  • The last stretch is uphill

Frequently asked

Skytree is nearly twice as high and has the better view. Tokyo Tower is the better subject — the orange lattice lit at night above Zojo-ji is the more memorable photograph, and looking at it costs nothing.
If you are going up at all, yes. It is a guided, timed visit to a smaller and much quieter space at 250m, rather than the busy main floor at 150m.
Every evening until around midnight, orange in the colder months and white in summer, with special schemes for seasons and events.
From the grounds of Zojo-ji temple, which puts a traditional gate in front of the tower. It is free, five minutes away, and the composition most photographers come for.
