Overview

Why the Malé Atolls

The two Malé atolls, North and South, make up most of Kaafu Atoll, the group around the capital (Kaafu also includes Gaafaru and Kaashidhoo). Malé is the capital; Velana International Airport is on the neighbouring island of Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé, next to it, is the usual place for a night if a connection is missed. Resorts here are normally reached by speedboat, which makes this the most convenient part of the country to fit around a first trip or a young family. Whether an evening arrival can be met by speedboat depends on the property, so confirm it in advance.

Highlights

What the Malé Atolls are for

A short list of what this part of the Maldives does well. Availability of each experience is property-level.

Resort islands by speedboatOne resort to an island, usually reached by a short boat ride from the airport. Reef quality, villa types and meal plans vary by resort.
Guesthouse stays on local islandsSince guesthouses began to be permitted on inhabited islands, around 2009, islands such as Maafushi have become the lower-cost way to stay. Expect modest dress in the village and generally no alcohol on the island; swimwear is usually limited to a designated beach.
Snorkelling, sandbank and dolphin tripsOperators on the guesthouse islands run snorkelling, sandbank and dolphin excursions. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Malé and Hulhumalé as the gatewayThe capital and the airport-side island make a practical overnight stop when a seaplane connection is not possible.
When to go

When to visit the Malé Atolls

The seasons follow the national pattern. Always check current conditions with your property before you travel.

Dec – AprThe drier months overall. The Maldives Meteorological Service puts the dry north-east monsoon at January to March, with December and April as transition months. This is also usually the busiest period for the country as a whole.
mid-May – NovThe wetter south-west monsoon: more cloud, wind and showers, and rougher seas that can affect excursions and some transfers. Rates are usually lower.
Getting there

One pass, the whole region

Speedboat is the norm here, which is the main reason this region suits late arrivals.

By boat

  • Resort speedboat: arranged by the resort. The time varies by island, so confirm it for your property.
  • Guesthouse islands: a speedboat is the quick way to islands such as Maafushi. Public ferries are slower and run on limited timetables; check the current timetable, as service may be reduced on some days.

If you land late

  • Seaplanes fly in daylight only. Whether an evening arrival can be met by speedboat depends on the property, so confirm in advance; if a night near the airport is needed, Hulhumalé is the usual choice.

Resorts in this area

  • The ministry register lists 58 resorts in Kaafu Atoll (the North and South Malé Atolls). We shortlist the right one for your budget, dates and transfer.
Itinerary

A first Malé Atolls stay

Night 1

Arrive and settle in

A speedboat from the airport to your island; keep the first day free.

Nights 2–3

The reef and the lagoon

House-reef or guided snorkelling, and a sandbank or dolphin trip if your property or island operators run one.

Last night

Time near the airport

Keep a margin before an international flight; a final night on a nearby island or in Hulhumalé is a sensible option.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Resorts in the Malé Atolls are normally reached by speedboat, and guesthouse islands by speedboat or public ferry, but your property confirms the exact transfer.
Usually, but price depends on dates, island and inclusions, and there is no single figure. Guesthouses are on inhabited islands, where alcohol is generally not available and swimwear is usually limited to a designated beach.
Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a late arrival may not connect by seaplane. Whether a speedboat can meet an evening arrival depends on the property, so confirm in advance. If not, a night in Hulhumalé near the airport is the usual fallback.
