A capital built on a river
Bangkok was founded as Thailand's capital on 21 April 1782, when Rama I moved the seat of the kingdom to Rattanakosin — an island cut from the east bank of the Chao Phraya, where the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew still stand. The city spreads across the river delta at an average of about a metre and a half above sea level, and the Chao Phraya still meanders south through it to the Gulf of Thailand. Thais call it Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, and its full ceremonial name runs to 168 letters, the longest place name in the world. For most visitors to Thailand it is the arrival point rather than the destination, which undersells it: the old royal quarter and the modern city are two different places sharing a name.

What Bangkok is for
The river island first, the modern city second, and the two do not feel like the same trip.
👑 Rattanakosin
- The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the temple of the Emerald Buddha, inside one walled compound
- Wat Pho beside it, which holds the reclining Buddha and is the older foundation
- Wat Arun across the water, best seen from the east bank rather than from its own steps
🛶 The river and the khlongs
- The Chao Phraya is a working waterway, not a scenic one, and the public boats are how locals cross the city
- The canals behind Thonburi on the west bank are the older street plan, still lived on
🛍️ Markets
- Chatuchak, the weekend market, is large enough that most visitors see a fraction of it
- Neighbourhood fresh markets open early and are finished by the time most itineraries start
🌃 After dark
- The city runs late, and the temperature is the reason — evening is when the streets fill

🚈 Rail
- The BTS Skytrain and the MRT metro cover the modern city and connect to the main rail and bus terminals
- Neither reaches into the old royal quarter, which is the single most useful thing to know before planning a day
⛴️ River boats
- Public boats run the Chao Phraya and are the practical way between the riverside temples
- Cross-river ferries are short hops rather than tours
🚕 Road
- Traffic is the constraint on any road journey, and timings are not reliable at peak hours
✈️ Arriving
- Bangkok is the main international gateway to Thailand and the usual start of a wider itinerary

The Grand Palace and the major temples enforce a dress code at the gate, and it is applied to everyone.
Bangkok is hot year-round. Mornings and evenings are when the city is comfortable and when it is busiest.
Images of the royal family are displayed publicly and treated seriously. Visitors are expected to follow local convention.
The Skytrain and metro serve the modern districts. Reaching Rattanakosin means a boat or a road journey.
Where to base yourself
The choice is really between the old city and the transit lines, and it changes the trip.

- Walkable to the palace and the temples, quieter at night, and off the rail network
- Suits a short visit built around the royal quarter
🚈 Along the Skytrain and metro
- The modern commercial districts sit on the rail lines and are the easiest base for moving around
- Further from the old city, but the journey is predictable in a way road travel here is not
🌊 Riverside
- The river hotels put the boat network at the door, which is its own form of transport
