Jomtien Beach
Jomtien is the long beach south of the Pratumnak headland, and it is the answer to most of what people dislike about Pattaya. It runs for several kilometres, flat and open, backed by a road of restaurants and residential blocks rather than the dense strip further north, and it is where families and long-stay visitors tend to base themselves. The sea here is a working gulf rather than a postcard — the genuinely clear water is offshore at Ko Lan, and this page will not pretend otherwise. What Jomtien offers is space, a long walkable shore, sunsets over the water, and an ordinary Thai seaside town atmosphere within twenty minutes of everything else.

- The full length of the shore, which is walkable end to end.
- Sunset over the water — the beach faces west across the gulf.
- The beachfront road, with seafood and everyday restaurants rather than a nightlife strip.

- Ferries to Ko Lan from the Bali Hai pier on the other side of the headland.
Getting there
South of the headland, and easy to reach.
Arriving
- Shared songthaews run between central Pattaya and Jomtien for a flat fare.
- It is around two hours by road from Bangkok; U-Tapao airport is at the southern end of the province.
- The beach road runs the length of the shore, so any point on it is a reasonable drop-off.
Best time
November to February, and midweek.
When to go
- November to February is dry, breezy and the clearest season of the year.
- Midweek is materially quieter — this is Bangkok’s nearest coast and weekends fill.
- Late afternoon for the sunset, which is the beach’s best hour.

Practical
- The clear water is at Ko Lan, offshore — the mainland beaches are pleasant rather than pristine.
- Jomtien is the calmer base; central Pattaya Beach is the busy one. The choice shapes the whole trip.
- Sea conditions change in the southwest monsoon from June, and island ferries can be cancelled in rough weather.
