What to Bring Home, and How
Spend on what a destination does better than anywhere — and let the mass-produced rest stay on the shelf.
Match the place to the purchase: ceramics and leather in Italy, silk and tea in Japan, spices and handwoven textiles across Southeast Asia, carpets and lanterns through the Gulf and Morocco.
Expected through much of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa; out of place in fixed-price shops and most of Europe. Begin warmly, settle near sixty or seventy percent of the first price, and always be willing to walk.
Buy from makers, cooperatives and reputable houses; treat the "antique" and the "branded" at impossible prices with the suspicion they deserve — they are usually neither.
Know India's duty-free allowance, keep your receipts, and check the restrictions on ivory, certain foods and large sums of cash before they become a problem.
