IATA: global air travel barely grew in July; India’s domestic market fell 6.3%

The numbers

IATA’s monthly passenger report, released in Geneva on 31 August 2026, shows total demand (measured in revenue passenger-kilometres) up 0.2% in July compared with July 2025. Excluding the Middle East, demand grew 1.2%. Capacity rose 0.3% and the load factor was 85.2%, down 0.1 percentage points. International demand fell 0.1% (up 1.5% excluding the Middle East) and domestic demand grew 0.6%.

By region, Asia-Pacific carriers saw demand fall 0.7% and Middle East carriers 9.5%. Among domestic markets, India was down 6.3%. Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, said the overall growth “was achieved despite year-on-year collective declines by carriers in North America and the Middle East.”

What it means for Indian travellers

Two figures matter for anyone booking from India this winter. The first is the 9.5% fall at Middle East carriers, which operate the main one-stop routes from India to Europe, Africa and the Americas: fewer seats through the Gulf hubs generally means firmer fares on those connections. The second is the 6.3% contraction in India’s own domestic market, which affects the positioning flights many international itineraries start with.

A load factor of 85.2% means aircraft are, on average, as full as they were a year ago even as growth has stalled. In practice, the cheapest fares on popular dates disappear early; booking the Diwali and Christmas departures now rather than in October is the sensible response to this data.
