Phuket floods: Patong clears mud and rocks as more heavy rain is forecast to 28 October

Flash floods and mudslides hit Patong and other parts of Phuket on 25–26 October. The water has drained, but Thailand’s weather department forecasts more heavy rain in the south to 28 October.

What happened

Heavy rain flooded roads in three of Phuket’s districts, Thalang, Mueang Phuket and Kathu, on Sunday 25 October. A section of Thepkrasattri Road, the main road between the airport side of the island and Phuket Town, became impassable to small vehicles (The Nation, 25 October). The rain continued overnight. At about 3am on 26 October, water carrying rocks, soil and mud ran down Khao 50 Pi hill into the Nanai area of Patong, damaging homes, shops, hotels and vehicles. Ban Na Yai recorded 117mm of rain in 24 hours (The Nation, 26 October).

Phuket’s vice governor said more than 100 households and businesses in Patong were affected, mainly around Soi Nanai 5 and Soi Nanai 8. Parts of Nanai Road were closed while crews cleared it. In Kamala, the road towards Patong was flooded near the Phuket FantaSea junction and down to one lane. In Phuket Town, water reached about 30–50cm on parts of Bangkok, Yaowarat and Ranong roads (The Phuket News, 26 October).

Where things stand

Thailand’s government said that by 8am on 26 October the floodwater had fully drained, and crews were clearing mud and debris. The Prime Minister asked local agencies to send staff and heavy machinery. Patong has set up help centres at the Patong Town Municipality Office, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong School and Patong Bay Hill Hotel. The 24-hour emergency line of the Patong municipality’s disaster unit is 076 342 600 (+66 76 342 600 from an Indian phone).

Officials worked with the Phuket chapter of the Thai Hotels Association to look after tourists staying in Patong hotels, and arranged other accommodation where needed (The Phuket News, 26 October).

Weather outlook

The Thai Meteorological Department’s advisory of 27 October, 5pm, forecasts continuing rain, with heavy rain in places, in southern Thailand on 27 and 28 October. It lists Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi among the heavy-rain areas on both days and warns of flash floods, run-off and landslides near foothills and in low-lying areas. Waves in the Andaman Sea are expected to exceed 2 metres in thundershowers, and the department tells all boats to proceed with caution. Its next advisory is due at 5am on 28 October.

What Indian travellers should do

Flights: we have found no report of flight disruption at Phuket airport, but check your flight status with your airline before leaving for the airport and allow extra time on the roads.

Boat trips: with waves above 2 metres forecast, island and snorkelling trips from Phuket may be changed or cancelled. Confirm with your operator the evening before.

On the roads: do not drive or ride a scooter through floodwater whose depth you cannot judge, and avoid hillside roads around Patong and Kamala during heavy rain.

Your hotel: if you are booked in Patong, especially near Nanai Road, ask the hotel whether it was affected before you arrive.

Save the number: Patong disaster unit, 076 342 600. We will update this page if the weather department extends its advisory or flights are affected.
