Cantilevered shore-operated fishing nets on the Fort Kochi waterfront, worked by teams of four to six men using counterweights. They are found nowhere else in India and have stood on this shoreline for centuries — the single most photographed thing in Kerala.

Sunset, for the light, and at high tide, when they are most likely to be actively worked. Ask at your hotel for the day’s tide times — the nets sit idle at low water.
Viewing from the promenade is free. If you accept an invitation to help haul the net, a tip is expected — agree the amount before you touch the ropes.
