The old harbour peninsula, and the reason most Kerala trips begin in Kochi. Four colonial powers left something standing here within a few hundred metres of each other, and unusually for India it is all walkable — the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Dutch cemetery and the Basilica sit within one circuit on foot.

Fort Kochi if you came for the heritage — it is walkable and holds most of the character accommodation. Ernakulam is cheaper and better connected for onward transport, but you will commute to everything worth seeing.
