Marari Beach
A wide stretch of sand backed by coconut palms and a working fishing village, about 30 minutes north of Alappuzha. It is the antidote to Kovalam — almost no promenade, few hawkers and very little built on the sand itself. Most people come here to do nothing after a houseboat night.

- There are no lifeguards on most of this beach — currents can be strong, so judge conditions carefully and swim where others do
- Very few shops or restaurants outside the resorts; bring what you need
- This is a working village — dress modestly away from the resort stretches

Common questions
Marari is undeveloped where the others are built up. There is no cliff-top strip and no promenade of restaurants — just a long beach, a fishing village and a handful of resorts set back among the palms. It suits people who want quiet rather than facilities.
One to three nights. It works best as a decompression stop after the Alleppey backwaters rather than a destination in its own right, though a longer stay suits anyone doing an Ayurvedic programme.
Take care. There are no lifeguards along most of the beach and currents can be strong. Swim in daylight, where others are swimming, and avoid the sea entirely during the monsoon.
Both, for the same reason — it is calm and uncrowded. Families should note the absence of lifeguards; couples generally find it the most restful stop on a Kerala itinerary.
Very little, deliberately. Walking the beach, watching the boats come in, cycling the village lanes, and Ayurvedic treatments. If you want activity or nightlife this is the wrong beach.
