When to visit

Because it never closes, Alleppey Backwaters rewards the early and the late. Arrive at sunrise (or after sunset, when the gates are lit) for empty tunnels and soft light. Mid-morning to afternoon is shoulder-to-shoulder at the lower gates — but the crowds thin dramatically beyond the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, so keep climbing for the shot and the silence.

  • The monsoon is cheaper and atmospheric, and the snake-boat race usually falls in August

Both, for different reasons. The houseboat is the overnight experience most people come for. A shikara canoe reaches the narrow village canals a houseboat physically cannot enter, and shows far more daily life. Many travellers do a shikara in the morning and board a houseboat after.
Ask whether it moors overnight or keeps its engine running, and where it moors. Those two answers matter more than bedroom count or photographs. Boats do not travel after dark by regulation, so the mooring is your evening.
One night on a houseboat is usually right. A three-hour shikara trip is the alternative if you are short of time or prefer not to sleep aboard.
