The longest lake in India and the largest in Kerala, forming the open centre of the backwater system. It spans several districts and connects the canal networks of Alleppey and Kumarakom.
Vembanad is broad open water; the Alleppey backwaters are narrow canals and lagoons feeding into it. The lake gives distance and horizon, the canals give village life at close range. Most trips experience both.
November to February for calm water and the migratory birds along the Kumarakom shore. August if you want the Nehru Trophy snake boat race, which is held on the Punnamada stretch.
From Alappuzha or Kumarakom, both about ninety minutes from Kochi. Houseboats, shikaras and sunset cruises all operate, and the public ferry between Alleppey and Kottayam crosses it cheaply.
It can be choppier than the sheltered canals, particularly in the afternoon and during the monsoon. Anyone prone to seasickness should prefer a morning trip or stay on the canal network.
Two to three hours for a cruise. If you are staying at Kumarakom or on a houseboat you will be on the lake anyway as part of that.
