Tanzania

The Serengeti and its migration, the Ngorongoro crater, Kilimanjaro rising straight out of the plain, and Zanzibar's spice-scented coast at the end of it — Tanzania is the one country where the classic African safari and a proper beach holiday sit a short flight apart.

Why Tanzania

Where the safari
meets the sea

Tanzania holds more of the images people carry of Africa than any other single country. The Serengeti is here, and so is the migration of well over a million wildebeest that moves around it through the year. The Ngorongoro crater is here, a collapsed volcano whose floor is one of the densest concentrations of large animals on the continent. Kilimanjaro is here, the highest mountain in Africa, climbable without ropes by anyone fit and patient. And Zanzibar is here, an hour's flight from the mainland, with Stone Town's carved doors and a coast of white sand and dhows.

What makes that unusual for Indian travellers is how easily the pieces join. The northern safari circuit — Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — runs as a single road-and-air loop, and a light aircraft takes you from a Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar in the same afternoon. A ten-night trip can hold a full safari and a full beach holiday without a wasted day, which is not something Kenya, South Africa or Botswana offer as cleanly.

It is also a country with a long Indian thread running through it. Gujarati and Khoja merchants settled Zanzibar and the coast generations ago, Dar es Salaam and Arusha have sizeable Indian-origin communities, and the food shows it: chapati, bhajia, pilau and biryani are everyday Tanzanian dishes rather than imports. Vegetarian travellers, who often find safari countries hard work, eat well here.

Why Travellers Choose Tanzania
The Serengeti: the great migration, big cats and open plains that go to the horizon.
Ngorongoro: a crater floor with lion, elephant, rhino and flamingo inside one volcanic wall.
Kilimanjaro: Africa's highest summit, a walk rather than a climb, above the clouds.
Zanzibar: Stone Town, spice farms and beaches an hour's flight from the safari.
Who Tanzania Suits
First-time safari travellers who want the classic version done properly.
Honeymooners who want wildlife first and a quiet beach second.
Families with children old enough for long game drives and early starts.
Trekkers with Kilimanjaro on the list, and a safari as the reward.

Best Time to Visit

When is your Tanzania?

Tanzania has two rainy seasons and two dry ones, and the wildebeest move to their own calendar. The dry season is the safe answer; the calving season is the one insiders choose.

June – October
The Long Dry Season
Clear skies, thinning grass and animals gathered at water — the easiest game viewing of the year. The migration is in the northern Serengeti and the Mara river crossings run from about July. Kilimanjaro is at its driest. Also the busiest and most expensive months, and camps in the north fill early.
Peak
January – February
The Short Dry Season
The wildebeest are on the southern Serengeti plains around Ndutu and calve in their hundreds of thousands, with every predator in attendance. Warm, green and less crowded than the northern-hemisphere summer. A good Kilimanjaro window, and Zanzibar is hot and dry.
Calving
November – December
Afternoon Showers, Fewer People
Brief storms, mostly in the afternoon, that rarely spoil a game drive. The herds are moving south through the central Serengeti, the parks are green again and the rates are lower — until the Christmas fortnight, which is peak again.
Short Rains
March – May
The Green Season
The heaviest rain of the year, especially April and May. Roads soften, some camps and many Zanzibar hotels close, and the mountain is wet. In return the country is at its greenest and emptiest, and the prices that stay open are the lowest of the year.

Visa for Indian Travellers

Tanzania visa — what you need to know

Indian passport holders need a visa for Tanzania — India is expressly excluded from the Commonwealth exemption. For tourism the visa is the Ordinary (single entry) visa, applied for through the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal before you travel, and the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal also lists Indian nationals as eligible for a visa on arrival. One visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar.

Two official pages, two different fees

the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal states that the Ordinary Visa fee is 50 US dollars, with a validity of up to 90 days, and that it is the visa tourists apply for. the High Commission of Tanzania in New Delhi carries the same 50-dollar general rate in its text, but its own fee table for the Ordinary/Tourist visa lists Indian citizens at 100 US dollars for a multiple-entry visa valid one year, 90 days at a time, against 50 dollars single entry for non-Indian citizens. Both figures are official. Budget on the figure for the channel you use — the portal if you apply online, the fee table if you lodge at the High Commission — and confirm it at the time you apply, because visa fees change.

Online first; arrival is a fallback

the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal names India among the countries whose nationals are eligible for both the online and the on-arrival visa, and in the same breath says it is recommended to use the online platform. Treat arrival as a fallback rather than a plan: an e-visa in hand is one queue fewer after a long overnight connection, and the portal warns that applications with wrong categories or missing attachments are rejected outright.

Processing, as published

the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal states that visa applications will be processed within ten days, apart from the referral category, which does not include India. the High Commission of Tanzania in New Delhi states that visas lodged with it take a minimum of five working days for the regular process, with a next-day service at an extra 50 dollars and a same-day service at 100 dollars, and that cash is not accepted there. Plan against the ten days, and against longer if you are asked for an interview at the nearest Tanzanian mission — the portal says applicants may be.

The grant notice is not the entry decision

A Visa Grant Notice arrives by email and can be downloaded from the portal, but the portal is explicit that it is not a final authority to enter — the immigration officer at the entry point decides, and a return ticket must be shown on arrival. Every passport holder, minors included, needs a separate application, and nothing on a submitted application can be changed afterwards, so enter your flight dates only once they are fixed.

Live Traveller Handles Your Visa

For all Tanzania journeys we design, we prepare your complete visa documentation package — the forms, the supporting documents, the sequence of submission. Our visa specialists help travellers prepare complete applications with careful document guidance. Final visa decisions always remain with the relevant authorities.

Before you apply
Passport valid for at least six months with at least one unused visa page
A copy of the passport biographic data page, uploaded with the application
Return ticket — required with the application and shown again on arrival
The online application and declaration form, completed in full
A colour photo on a plain background, JPG, no larger than 500 KB or 45 × 35 mm
Fee paid online by Visa or Mastercard; the High Commission does not take cash
At the High Commission: two passport photos, a flight itinerary and a signed form
Minors travelling alone or with one parent: a notarised consent letter from both
Select the right visa type — tourism is the Ordinary visa, and errors are rejected
Check Zanzibar's own entry formalities and any yellow fever rule for your routing
Fee and processing, as the authorities publish them
Indian passport holders need a visa for Tanzania, and the visa for tourism is the Ordinary (single entry) visa. the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal publishes the Ordinary Visa fee as 50 US dollars with a validity of up to 90 days, lists Indian nationals as eligible for both the online and the on-arrival visa, and recommends applying online. the High Commission of Tanzania in New Delhi repeats the 50-dollar general rate but its fee table for the Ordinary/Tourist visa lists Indian citizens at 100 US dollars for a multiple-entry visa valid one year with 90 days per stay. Both are official, so budget on the figure that belongs to the channel you use and confirm it when you apply. On timing, the portal states that applications are processed within ten days outside the referral category; the High Commission states a minimum of five working days for applications lodged with it, with paid next-day and same-day services. Plan against ten days, and longer if an interview is requested. A Visa Grant Notice is not a final authority to enter — the officer at the entry point decides — and a return ticket must be shown on arrival. One visa covers Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change; confirm both when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
Food & culture in Tanzania
Nyama choma — grilled meat, usually goat or beef, eaten with the fingers and a pile of kachumbari tomato-and-onion salad. The national way to spend an evening.
Ugali — stiff maize porridge, the staple of the mainland, eaten with stews, greens and beans. Plain by design; the sauce does the work.
Pilau and biryani — the Swahili coast cooks rice the way the Gujarat and Oman traders taught it, spiced with cardamom, cloves and cinnamon grown on Zanzibar itself.
Zanzibar mix — urojo, a tangy mango-and-turmeric soup topped with bhajia, potatoes and crisp cassava. Street food that tastes of Gujarat and the Indian Ocean at once.
Forodhani Gardens — Stone Town's seafront night market: mishkaki skewers, grilled seafood, Zanzibar pizza and sugar-cane juice pressed with ginger and lime.
Chai and chapati — the everyday breakfast across the country, with mandazi (fried dough) and often bhajia. Indian travellers will recognise most of the menu.
Vegetarian travellers — easier than almost anywhere else in Africa. Dar es Salaam and Arusha have long-established Indian-run restaurants, safari lodges cater for vegetarian and Jain diets when told in advance, and beans, greens, chapati, rice and lentils are ordinary Tanzanian food, not a special request.
Getting around Tanzania
Safari 4x4: A closed Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, driver-guide included, is how the northern circuit is done. Distances between parks are three to five hours on rough roads.
Light aircraft: Scheduled small planes link Arusha, the Serengeti airstrips, Zanzibar and the southern parks. They save a full day of driving and are the normal way to reach the coast from a safari.
Zanzibar: A flight of around an hour from Arusha or twenty minutes from Dar es Salaam, or a fast ferry from Dar es Salaam to Stone Town.
Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO): The gateway to Arusha and the northern circuit, about an hour from town. Land here for safari; Dar es Salaam only if the south or the coast comes first.
Cities: Taxis and ride apps in Dar es Salaam and Arusha; agree fares before setting off where there is no meter. Long-distance buses exist but are slow for a holiday.
Travel Tips

Travel Tanzania intelligently

Tanzania is a well-run safari country and an easy one for Indian travellers. The details that matter are timing, cash and the visa paperwork.

Do's
Apply for the e-visa online before you fly, and carry the grant notice printed as well as on your phone.
Fix your dates around the migration, not the other way round — ask where the herds will be in your month.
Carry US dollars in clean, recent-series notes for tips and extras; older or damaged notes are often refused.
Tell your travel designer about vegetarian, Jain or no-onion-garlic needs — lodges cook for them if told in advance.
Buy a local SIM at the airport with your passport; Vodacom and Airtel cover the towns and most lodges.
Take altitude seriously on Kilimanjaro: choose the longer route and walk slower than feels natural.
Dress modestly in Stone Town and the villages of Zanzibar, which are conservative Muslim communities.
Don'ts
Don't plan to pay with UPI or rely on a single card — carry cash and a backup card, and expect only lodges and larger shops to take cards.
Don't book non-refundable flights before the visa is granted; the portal says decisions can take up to ten days.
Don't try to see the whole northern circuit in three nights. Give the Serengeti alone at least two.
Don't expect Zanzibar's east-coast beaches to be swimmable all day — the tide goes out a long way. The north coast does not have this problem.
Don't visit in April or May expecting the dry-season safari; it is the wettest time of the year and much is closed.
Don't leave without a return ticket you can show on arrival — it is an entry condition, not a formality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tanzania travel FAQ

The questions Indian travellers ask most often before booking Tanzania.

Yes. India is expressly excluded from Tanzania's Commonwealth visa exemption. Tourists apply for the Ordinary (single entry) visa through the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal, which also lists Indian nationals as eligible for a visa on arrival but recommends applying online. One visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar. The portal publishes the Ordinary visa fee as 50 US dollars for up to 90 days; the High Commission of Tanzania in New Delhi's fee table separately lists Indian citizens at 100 US dollars for a one-year multiple-entry visa. Confirm the fee for the channel you use when you apply. Final visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities.
the Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal states that applications are processed within ten days, apart from the referral category, which does not include Indian nationals. the High Commission of Tanzania in New Delhi states a minimum of five working days for applications lodged with it, with paid next-day and same-day options. Plan against ten days, do not book non-refundable flights before the grant notice arrives, and remember that the grant notice is not itself the entry decision — the officer at the airport makes that, and you must show a return ticket.
June to October is the long dry season — the clearest skies, the easiest game viewing and, from about July, the migration's river crossings in the northern Serengeti. January and February are the calving season on the southern plains, warm and green with fewer people. November and early December bring short afternoon rains and lower rates. March to May is the long rains, when roads soften and many camps and Zanzibar hotels close. Kilimanjaro is best in either dry window.
Ten to twelve nights is the comfortable first trip: five to seven on the northern circuit — Tarangire, the Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti — and three to five on Zanzibar. A safari alone works in six or seven nights. Adding Kilimanjaro needs seven to nine more days on the mountain, plus a rest day, so a climb-and-safari-and-beach trip is closer to three weeks.
Unusually good for a safari country. Tanzania has a long-established Indian-origin community, so chapati, bhajia, pilau, dal and rice are everyday food rather than special orders, and Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Stone Town have Indian-run restaurants. Safari lodges cook for vegetarian and Jain diets when told in advance — tell your travel designer at booking, not at the lodge.
Yes — it is the most common Tanzanian itinerary and the reason many Indian travellers choose Tanzania over Kenya. Scheduled light aircraft fly from the Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar in an afternoon, so the day you leave the bush you are on the beach. The usual shape is Kilimanjaro Airport in, the northern circuit by road, a flight to Zanzibar, and home from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam.
Safari areas and lodges are very secure, and Zanzibar's resorts and Stone Town are used to visitors. In Dar es Salaam and Arusha take ordinary big-city care — use hotel taxis or ride apps at night and keep valuables out of sight. Malaria is present in most of the country below the highlands, so see a travel doctor before you go. Check your government's current travel advice before you travel.
The Tanzania You Come For

Tanzania for every kind
of traveller

The northern circuit and Zanzibar are the backbone of almost every trip. What changes is how long you give each, whether the mountain is in, and whether you go south where almost nobody else does.

🦁
The Northern Circuit
Recommended: 5–7 Nights

Arusha to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti — the classic Tanzanian safari, driven in a pop-top 4x4 with a guide who does this every week.

Tarangire for elephant herds and baobab country
Ngorongoro — a full day on the crater floor
Two to three nights in the Serengeti, positioned for the migration
Fly out from a Serengeti airstrip rather than drive back
🦓
Following the Migration
Recommended: 3–4 Nights in the Serengeti

The wildebeest move around the Serengeti through the year, so where you stay depends on when you come — southern plains for calving, the north for the Mara river crossings.

January – February: calving on the southern short-grass plains around Ndutu
July – October: river crossings in the northern Serengeti
Mobile camps move with the herds; permanent lodges do not
Big cats are resident all year — the migration is the bonus, not the only show
🏔️
Climbing Kilimanjaro
Recommended: 7–9 Days on the Mountain

The highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres, walked rather than climbed, through five climate zones from rainforest to glacier. Altitude, not difficulty, is what decides who summits.

Machame and Lemosho are the scenic routes; Marangu has huts rather than tents
Longer routes acclimatise better and summit more often
January – February and June – October are the driest windows
Pair it with a short safari afterwards, when your legs have recovered
🏝️
Zanzibar
Recommended: 3–5 Nights

Stone Town's carved doors and Indian-built merchant houses, spice farms in the interior, and beaches on the north and east coasts that are the reason most people fly in.

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — give it one full day
Nungwi and Kendwa in the north for swimming at any tide
Paje and the east coast for kitesurfing and a quieter beach
Jozani forest for the red colobus monkeys found nowhere else
🌿
The Wild South
Recommended: 4–6 Nights

Nyerere National Park and Ruaha — enormous, far quieter than the north, with boat safaris on the Rufiji and walking safaris that the northern parks do not allow.

Nyerere, formerly the Selous, for boat safaris and wild dog
Ruaha for baobabs, big lion prides and very few vehicles
Fly-in only in practice; the roads are long
Best for second-time safari travellers who want space
💍
Honeymoons
Recommended: 9–11 Nights

Tanzania is the safari-and-beach honeymoon done in one country: four or five nights on the northern circuit, then a light aircraft straight to a beach on Zanzibar.

Serengeti tented camp → Zanzibar beach villa, one flight between them
Ngorongoro crater-rim lodges for the view at breakfast
Add a Stone Town night for the old city and the Forodhani night market
👨‍👩‍👧
Family Safaris
Recommended: 8–10 Nights

Game drives are long and start early, so this suits children who can manage that. Lodges with pools, a shorter safari and a longer beach stay is the shape that works.

Tarangire and Ngorongoro deliver big animals quickly for short attention spans
Some camps set minimum ages — check before you fall in love with one
Zanzibar's north coast beaches are calm and shallow
Not sure which Tanzania is yours?

Tell us your dates, how many nights you have and whether the mountain is on the list, and our travel designers will place the safari where the animals will be and build the beach around it.

Packing Guide

What to pack
for Tanzania

Three climates in one trip: cold dawns on the crater rim, hot dusty afternoons in the Serengeti, and humid sea air on Zanzibar. Light aircraft impose a soft-bag weight limit, so pack small.

🦁
Safari
Neutral-coloured clothing — khaki, olive, brown; avoid black and dark blue, which attract tsetse flies
A fleece or light down jacket for the Ngorongoro rim, which is cold at dawn
Binoculars — one pair per person, not one per vehicle
Wide-brimmed hat, high-factor sun cream and a scarf for dust
Insect repellent and any malaria prophylaxis your doctor prescribes
🏔️
Kilimanjaro
Layered system from base layers to a proper insulated jacket for summit night
Broken-in waterproof boots and gaiters
Headtorch, warm gloves, a balaclava and sunglasses rated for glare
Good operators rent sleeping bags and down jackets in Moshi — ask before buying
🏝️
Zanzibar
Swimwear for the beach, plus a cover-up and long trousers for Stone Town and villages
Reef-safe sun cream and water shoes for the tidal flats on the east coast
A light rain layer if travelling November to May
🔌
Practical
Type D and G plug adapters (Indian plugs fit type D; carry G for hotels)
US dollars in clean, recent notes, plus a card for lodges and a backup card
Printed e-visa grant notice, return ticket and insurance certificate
A power bank — camp electricity is often solar and switched off at night
Hard-shell suitcases for the safari legs; drones without a permit; single-use plastic bags, which Tanzania bans
💡
Tanzania packing tip

Safari flights carry a strict luggage allowance in soft bags — no hard suitcases. Pack the safari in a duffel and leave the rest with your hotel or send it ahead to Zanzibar.
