Sonamarg
A small resort town on the Sindh river in Ganderbal district, on the Srinagar-Leh highway, known as the Meadow of Gold and as the base for Thajiwas Glacier.
The Meadow of Gold on the road to Ladakh
Sonamarg is a small resort town in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, on the Sindh river and on NH1, the Srinagar-Leh highway. It stands at about 2,740 m and, by most sources, about 80 to 87 km from Srinagar by road; the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation page gives a larger figure, so check a map. The J&K tourism corporation calls it the Meadow of Gold, from sona, the Hindi word for gold, and describes it as set among a valley of flowers and lakes with forests of birch, fir and pine, and as the gateway to Ladakh. The Zoji La pass, at 3,540 m, lies about 20 km to the east. Visitors come for the meadow, for Thajiwas Glacier about 3 km away, and for the high lakes of the Great Lakes trek, and Baltal, further up the valley, is the base camp for one of the two routes to the Amarnath cave. Sonamarg is also a place where the security position and access can change. This page sets out what is known, with dates, and what to check before you plan.

What a visit holds
Most of Sonamarg is the meadow, the river and the glacier path, and some of what is usually listed here has been closed or restricted since 2025.
🏔️ Thajiwas Glacier
- The glacier lies about 3 km from the town and is reached on foot, by pony or by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, according to travel sources
- The tourism corporation gives its altitude as 9,186 feet and lists a half-day hike to the waterfalls around it in summer
- The glacier and Hung Park were reported by Rising Kashmir to have reopened in early 2026 after being closed since May 2025, and the glacier has been shrinking for decades, so ask what can be reached on the day
🌼 The meadow and the river
- The Sindh river runs through the valley and feeds the meadow that gives the town its name
- Walking in the meadow and along the river is the simplest way to spend a visit
- The tourism corporation notes that angling needs a licence, so do not fish without one
🥾 High lakes and passes
- Kishansar, Vishansar and Gangabal lakes are visible from Nichnai Pass, according to the tourism corporation
- The Great Lakes trek that starts near Sonamarg was reported closed after the 2025 attack, with operators asking for reopening in June 2026 and no confirmed reopening found
- Trekking in this area needs permission from the authorities, so do not set out on any lake or pass route without it
How a visit can run
Up the Sindh valley
Drive from Srinagar along the Sindh valley, look over the meadow and the river, and go to Thajiwas Glacier if it is open and the weather allows.
A slower second day
Walk the meadow and the river in the morning, with the light low and the crowds thin, and keep the afternoon for the drive back or onward.
Zoji La and Ladakh
The road continues over the Zoji La towards Kargil, so check its status and the day's traffic arrangements before you plan to cross.
Getting there and around
Sonamarg is reached by road from Srinagar, and the route depends on weather and the day's traffic arrangements.
From Srinagar
- About 80 to 87 km by road along the Sindh valley, according to most sources
- The tourism corporation's page names Srinagar's airport as the nearest
- Check the road and the day's traffic arrangements before you set out
Through the tunnels
- The Z-Morh tunnel, about 6.5 km, opened on 13 January 2025 and gives year-round access past an avalanche-prone stretch
- The Zojila tunnel is not open and is reported to be due in 2028
- Until then the road over the Zoji La remains the way to Ladakh
On the ground
- The meadow and the river can be covered on foot
- Thajiwas Glacier is about 3 km from the town, on foot, by pony or by four-wheel-drive vehicle
- Agree fares in advance and do not hand over money before the arrangement is clear
What to know before you go
Five points shape a visit to Sonamarg.
As we read it on 6 November 2026, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, naming Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, the city of Srinagar and the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, with exceptions only for air travel to and from the city of Jammu and travel within it. The Government of Canada says to avoid all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir because of the unpredictable security situation. Other governments publish their own advice. Check the current advice of your own government, and your insurer's position, before you book.
After the attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, many Kashmir tourist sites were closed for a security review. Reports say Sonamarg was among 16 destinations reopened in June 2025, with further batches in September 2025 and February 2026, while the Thajiwas Glacier is reported to have reopened only in early 2026. Counts of reopened sites differ between reports, so we give none. Check with the Ganderbal district administration or J&K Tourism before you plan around any site.
The Z-Morh tunnel at Gagangir, about 6.5 km long, was inaugurated on 13 January 2025 and bypasses an avalanche-prone stretch of the road to Sonamarg for year-round access. The Zojila tunnel, on the same road beyond Sonamarg, reached its breakthrough on 9 June 2026 but is reported to be due for completion in 2028, so it is not open. The road over the Zoji La still closes in snow and landslides. We could not find a current notice, so check with J&K Traffic Police or the Border Roads Organisation.
Baltal is the base camp for one route to the Amarnath cave. The 2026 Yatra was suspended on both its routes from 9 August 2026 for track repairs and bad weather, according to All India Radio, and we found no formal closing notice. During the Yatra season movement on this road is regulated by J&K Traffic Police, so check their daily advisories and the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.
Sources give 80 to 87 km from Srinagar, and the tourism corporation's own page gives about 110 km. Heights given for Thajiwas range from about 2,800 to 3,000 m. We use approximate figures and no pony, hotel or entry prices.
Where to base yourself
Sonamarg has hotels, huts and guesthouses, and the tourism corporation notes that many open only in the summer months. We do not name properties.
In the meadow
- Lodgings stand along the main road and around the meadow, within reach of the Thajiwas path
- The J&K tourism corporation says many hotels and lodges are open only in summer, with cottages or guest rooms available in winter
- Confirm heating, hot water and meals before you book, as nights are cold even in summer
If you come as a day out
- Sonamarg is often visited from Srinagar in a day, about 80 to 87 km each way
- A day out leaves little margin for a road closure, so keep a spare day in the plan
- Tell your hotel in Srinagar your plan so that they can advise on the day
If you stay a night or more
- Book well in advance for the summer, according to the tourism corporation
- Ask what is open, as winter lodgings and services are more limited
- Ask whether a vehicle can reach the door and how the road is kept clear in snow
Practical notes
A few details that keep a visit simple.
Before you set out
- Read your own government's current advice and check your insurer's position
