Gokarna
A small Konkan coast temple town in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, with the Mahabaleshwar Temple, five beaches and a coastal trek between them.
A temple town on the Konkan coast
Gokarna is a small town in Uttara Kannada district, on Karnataka's Konkan coast and the Arabian Sea. The Government of India's tourism site describes it as a town with two principal streets and clusters of tile-roofed brick houses, and as an important centre of Sanskrit learning. Karnataka Tourism calls it a place where a town of great religious significance and quiet beaches sit side by side. At its centre is the Mahabaleshwar Temple, dedicated to Shiva as the Atmalinga and counted among Karnataka's seven Muktisthalas; it is managed by an overseeing committee appointed by the Supreme Court of India, according to Karnataka Tourism. The Government of India's tourism site says the temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1714 and rebuilt later in the eighteenth century. Around the town are five beaches, the main town beach, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise, linked by a coastal trek. Gokarna is also a place where the sea needs care: press reports describe drownings on this coast, including in January and November 2026, and Karnataka Tourism's own description of the main beach says it is not suited to swimming because of strong currents. This page sets out what we could confirm from official tourism sources, marks what rests on press reports, and says plainly where you should ask on the day.

What a visit holds
Gokarna combines temple visits, beach days and a coastal trek, and each carries its own conditions.
🛕 The temple and the town
- The Mahabaleshwar Temple houses the Atmalinga, and Karnataka Tourism says entry is free and donations are accepted by the Shri-Kshetra Mahabaleshwar Devasthan Trust
- Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the Kotiteertha tank in the town centre before darshan, and the town has a circuit of five shrines that includes the Maha Ganapati temple
- Karnataka Tourism says the temple has two darshan sessions a day with extended hours on Shivaratri and Mondays, but timings shift, so ask at the temple office
🏖️ The five beaches
- The main town beach lies next to the temple, and Karnataka Tourism's own description says it is not suited to swimming because of strong currents
- Kudle is the beach nearest the town, and Om Beach, shaped like two joined crescents, is about 6 km away
- Half Moon is reached only by a cliffside trek from Om Beach or by boat, and Paradise by trekking past Half Moon or by boat from Om Beach
🥾 The Beach Trek
- The trek from Kudle through Om and Half Moon to Paradise crosses rocky headlands and clifftops
- Karnataka Tourism describes it as a half-day to full-day hike, and gives two to four hours, so allow for more on a hot day
- Wear sturdy footwear and carry water, as the official page advises
How a visit can run
The temple and the town
Visit the Mahabaleshwar Temple early, after the traditional bath at the Kotiteertha tank if you wish, and walk to the main beach and the Maha Ganapati temple. Ask at the temple office about the day's darshan arrangements.
The beaches and the trek
Walk the coastal trek from Kudle through Om to Half Moon and Paradise, or take a boat between beaches, and keep the sea in mind when you decide whether to swim. Carry water and sturdy footwear.
Weather, the coast or onward
Keep a day for weather, for a visit to a nearby place such as Mirjan Fort, or for the journey onward.
Getting there and around
Gokarna is reached by road and rail, and the beaches are reached on foot or by boat.

What to know before you go
Five points shape a visit to Gokarna.
Press reports describe drownings on this coast, including in January and November 2026. Karnataka Tourism's own description of the main beach says it is not suited to swimming because of strong currents. Reports say lifeguards are deployed at the main beaches and describe a flag system, but we could not confirm either from an official page. We found no official advisory naming any Gokarna beach for November 2026, although press reports say the Uttara Kannada administration suspended coastal tourism, including at the Gokarna beaches, during a weather alert in May 2026, so restrictions can be imposed at short notice. We also found no sea-state bulletin for November 2026; the latest India Meteorological Department fishermen's warning we found, dated 26 August 2026, concerned squally weather off the Karnataka coast. Heed lifeguards and warning signs, keep out of the water when conditions are rough, and ask locally before you swim.
Karnataka Tourism says men wear a dhoti or pancha and women a saree or salwar suit, that jeans and shorts are prohibited, and that cameras, video and selfies are not permitted in the sanctum area. It also says non-Hindus are restricted from the inner sanctum, while another page on the same site says visitors should check with the temple office on arrival. We found no 2026 notice, so confirm the current rules on the day.
Karnataka Tourism lists October to March for pleasant weather and says water activities run mainly in those months. The Uttara Kannada district site notes that the district receives very heavy monsoon rain. Check the forecast, and keep plans flexible if you travel in the rainy months.
Karnataka Tourism lists Gokarna Road station about 10 km from the town, Ankola about 20 km away and better connected, and Kumta about 31 km. It names Manohar International Airport at Mopa in Goa, about 175 km away, as the airport it lists; Mangaluru also serves this coast. Confirm train and road options for your dates.
The temple's age, its history and the legend of the Atmalinga rest on tradition and on the tourism departments' accounts. Karnataka Tourism's destination page also carries operator-style prices and wording that we do not reuse. We give approximate wording and no fees, times or prices.
Choosing where to base yourself
Gokarna offers a choice between the temple town and the beaches, and each has a different feel. We do not name properties.
In the town
- The town centre is close to the Mahabaleshwar Temple, the Kotiteertha tank and the main beach
- A base here suits pilgrims and early starts for darshan
- Rooms in a pilgrimage town can be simple, and demand rises around festivals, particularly Maha Shivaratri
Near the beaches
- Kudle Beach is about a ten-minute walk south of the town, according to Karnataka Tourism, with cafes and guesthouses
- Om Beach is about 6 km from the town and is the hub for water sports and boat rides
- Half Moon and Paradise have very few facilities, and are reached on foot or by boat
Before you book
- Ask how you will reach the place from the road, and whether luggage can be carried the last stretch
- Ask what the place does about sea conditions and whether it has any guidance for guests
- Confirm meals and facilities, because beach lodgings often have limited menus
Practical notes
A few details that keep a visit simple.

At the beaches
- Follow lifeguards and warning signs, and keep out of the water when the sea is rough
- Do not swim at the main beach, which Karnataka Tourism describes as unsuited to swimming because of strong currents
- Carry water and sun protection, and wear sturdy footwear on the trek
