Karnataka packs an unusual amount into one state: Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire spread across a boulder landscape on the Tungabhadra; Mysuru, with a palace still in ceremonial use; the coffee estates of Coorg and Chikmagalur in the Western Ghats; the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu; and the Nilgiri Biosphere reserves at Bandipur and Nagarhole. It is also the easiest state in India for a short break, with most of it inside a five-hour drive of Bengaluru.

The Best Time to Visit Karnataka

Season shapes Karnataka more than any other planning decision. Here is what each window actually gives you.

October – MarchThe best window statewide — dry and comfortable for Hampi, the coast and the hills alike.
June – SeptemberThe monsoon is exactly when Coorg and Chikmagalur are at their best: waterfalls full, estates intensely green, prices low. Trails get muddy and leeches are common.
March – MayHot on the plains and at Hampi, but the strongest season for wildlife sightings at Bandipur and Nagarhole.
DasaraMysuru’s ten-day festival falls in September or October and fills the city — spectacular, and to be booked far ahead.

Getting there

  • Bengaluru (BLR) is the main gateway and the origin for most short breaks.
  • Hubli (HBX) is the closest airport to Hampi; Hosapete is the railhead.
  • Mangaluru (IXE) serves the coast at Gokarna, Udupi and Murudeshwar.

Getting around

  • Private car with driver; roads are good and the legs are mostly three to five hours.
  • Hampi is best explored by bicycle or coracle as well as by car — the site is large and flat.
  • Ghat roads to Coorg and Chikmagalur are winding; avoid night driving in monsoon.

Bandipur or Nagarhole

Jeep safari at dawn and dusk. Nothing is guaranteed — elephant and gaur are the more commonly reported sightings, and tigers are rarely seen.

Two full days covers the main Vijayanagara sites — the sacred centre, the royal enclosure and Vittala Temple — at a reasonable pace. Three days allows the boulder landscape across the river and sunrise or sunset viewpoints without rushing.
Coorg and Chikmagalur for coffee estates, Sakleshpur for hills and trekking, Mysuru for palace and heritage, and Gokarna for the coast. All are within a four to six hour drive, and two to three nights is the right length.
Coorg is at its best between June and September — waterfalls run full, the estates are intensely green and the air is cool. Trails get muddy and leeches are common, so pack accordingly. Demand and prices are both lower than in winter.
Yes, at Bandipur and Nagarhole, both part of the Nilgiri Biosphere and among India’s better-managed reserves. Sightings are best from March to June. Elephant and gaur are reported far more often than tigers, and no sighting of any kind can be promised.

Coorg and Chikmagalur are the strongest case — coffee estate stays, cool hills, short transfers and genuine seclusion. Gokarna offers quieter beaches than Goa. Hampi is remarkable but hot and demanding, better as a heritage leg than a romantic one.
Well developed. Coffee-estate bungalows in Coorg and Chikmagalur, heritage properties in Mysuru, wildlife lodges at Kabini and Bandipur — Kabini is among the best-regarded wildlife lodging in India — and full-service city hotels in Bengaluru.
Good, and predictable. Bengaluru is the most expensive part; Hampi and the coast are inexpensive. Coffee estate stays and Kabini lodges are the premium items. Value is strongest in the shoulder months either side of the monsoon.
Among the easiest states in India. Bengaluru is cosmopolitan with good transport including a metro, Hampi has a long-established backpacker scene, and Gokarna is relaxed. Rail and bus links between the main destinations are frequent and straightforward.
Mysore silk saris and sandalwood, Channapatna lacquered wooden toys, Bidriware inlaid metalwork from Bidar, and Coorg coffee bought at an estate. Mysuru’s Devaraja Market and the government Cauvery emporia are the reliable places.
Mostly yes. Mysuru and Bengaluru are easy, coffee estates involve gentle walking, and Kabini safaris are on flat terrain. Hampi is the exception — it is a large site walked over uneven boulder-strewn ground in real heat, so plan mornings only and use an auto between the clusters.
Yes, and it is more developed than most visitors expect. There are established Ayurvedic centres around Mysuru and in Coorg, and Mysuru has a long international reputation for ashtanga yoga, with schools drawing students for months at a time. Coffee-estate stays serve a similar restorative purpose without a formal programme.
No permit is required to travel anywhere in Karnataka, and Indian travellers need only photo ID. Bandipur, Nagarhole and Kabini require park entry and safari bookings with capped daily numbers — that is ticketing rather than a permit. Hampi charges monument entry covering several sites on one ticket.
Before: book Kabini or Bandipur lodges and safaris well ahead in season, and decide whether you are entering at Bengaluru or Mangaluru, because that reverses the route. During: allow six hours Bengaluru to Hampi and treat Hampi as two full days. After: Karnataka combines naturally with Goa, three to four hours north of Gokarna, or with Kerala across the Wayanad border.
