Hazara Rama Temple
The kings' own chapel in the royal centre, its outer walls carved with a processional frieze of elephants, horses, soldiers and dancers.
The court's private temple
The ASI lists it among the principal monuments of the city as the Hazara Ramachandra temple, and its position tells you what it was for: it stands inside the royal centre rather than out among the public temples, which makes it the ceremonial chapel of the court. Its distinction is on the outside. The enclosure walls carry bands of relief — elephants, horses, soldiers and dancers moving in procession — so the building reads as a record of how the Vijayanagara court presented itself, cut into the stone of the place it did it.

What there is to see
Walls first, interior second — an unusual order for a temple.
🐘 The processional friezes
- Bands of relief along the enclosure walls: elephants, horses, marching soldiers, dancers
- They are read as a sequence, walking the wall, rather than looked at in one place
🛕 The shrine
- Dedicated to Rama, at the centre of the royal enclosure
👑 The setting
- The royal centre around it holds the Mahanavami Dibba and the enclosures ASI records as the court's own ground
Getting there
In the royal centre, south of the bazaar and the river.
🧭 Position
- Within the walled royal area, on the usual circuit between the Zenana enclosure and the Mahanavami Dibba
When to go
The friezes are relief carving, so the light matters more than usual.
🌅 Light
- Low morning or evening sun rakes across the reliefs and makes them legible; flat midday light does not
Before you go
Small, and easy to walk past on the way to larger monuments.
🚶 On site
- Walk the outside of the enclosure before going in — the carving is the reason to stop here
Close by
The royal centre and the temples beyond it.
