Santa Cruz Basilica

A Roman Catholic basilica in Fort Kochi, founded by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, demolished under the British and rebuilt in the late nineteenth. It was raised to basilica status in the twentieth century.

For the interior. It is one of relatively few Indian churches painted throughout — ceiling frescoes, stained glass and a decorated nave — and the contrast with the plain St Francis Church a few streets away is the interesting part.

Twenty to thirty minutes. It sits within any Fort Kochi walking circuit rather than warranting a separate trip.

No, entry is free. There is a donation box, and the basilica remains in active parish use.

Generally yes outside service times, though flash is discouraged. Do not photograph during services or where a notice asks you not to.

Modest dress with shoulders and knees covered, as at any active church. Enter quietly, particularly if a service is underway.
