Lighthouse Beach, Kovalam

The southern and best known of Kovalam’s three crescents, named for the red-and-white striped Vizhinjam lighthouse standing on the headland above it. It is the most developed beach in Kerala — a paved promenade of restaurants and shops runs behind the sand — and the most convenient, at half an hour from Trivandrum airport.

  • The beach is Kovalam’s centre; everything is walkable along the promenade
  • About 30 minutes from Trivandrum (TRV) airport
  • Trivandrum Central station is about 45 minutes by road
Best time

When to visit

Because it never closes, Lighthouse Beach rewards the early and the late. Arrive at sunrise (or after sunset, when the gates are lit) for empty tunnels and soft light. Mid-morning to afternoon is shoulder-to-shoulder at the lower gates — but the crowds thin dramatically beyond the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, so keep climbing for the shot and the silence.
