Why Kovalam
Kovalam is Kerala’s original beach resort and still its most developed — three crescent beaches below a headland, with the lighthouse above them. It is busier and more built-up than Varkala, closer to an airport than anywhere else in Kerala, and it is where the state’s longest-established Ayurvedic centres are.

Arriving
- Trivandrum (TRV) is about 30 minutes away, with domestic and Gulf connections
- Trivandrum Central is the railhead, about 45 minutes, on the main coastal line
- A Vande Bharat runs the Trivandrum–Kasaragod corridor
Getting around
- The beaches are connected by a pedestrian promenade — no vehicle needed
- Autos for Trivandrum and Vizhinjam; agree the fare first
- A car is only needed for Poovar or onward travel to Varkala

Worth knowing
- Sea currents can be strong; swim between the flags where lifeguards are posted
- Lighthouse Beach is lined with restaurants and touts — Samudra is the quieter alternative
- Monsoon closes much of the beachfront and swimming becomes unsafe
- Ayurvedic quality varies enormously; physician-led centres are a different proposition from beach massage
Who it suits
- Good for families: calm-ish water, short transfer from the airport, plenty of food choice
- Convenient for older travellers given the 30-minute airport transfer and flat promenade
- Fine for couples, though Varkala and Marari are quieter
- Less suited to travellers wanting an undeveloped beach — this is Kerala’s busiest

Kovalam — questions
Kovalam is more developed, has better hotel choice and is 30 minutes from the airport. Varkala is quieter, more dramatic because of the cliff, and has a younger, more backpacker feel. Choose Kovalam for convenience and facilities, Varkala for atmosphere.
Two or three. One day for the beaches, one for Trivandrum, and a third if you want Poovar or a slower pace. An Ayurvedic course changes this entirely — those run seven nights and upward.
Generally yes at Lighthouse Beach where lifeguards are posted, but currents can be strong and there are drownings each year. Swim between the flags, avoid the sea in the monsoon, and take local advice on the day rather than assuming conditions.
It has Kerala’s longest-established centres, and some are genuinely physician-led with proper treatment calendars. It also has a great deal of casual beach massage marketed as Ayurveda. The two are not comparable — check for qualified physicians and a consultation before booking a course.
October to March for dry weather and calm sea. April and May are hot and humid. The southwest monsoon from June to September makes swimming unsafe and closes much of the beachfront, though it is the traditional Ayurvedic treatment season.
Yes. The transfer from the airport is the shortest of any Kerala beach, the promenade is walkable and safe, and there is wide food choice. Watch the currents with younger children and prefer the calmer stretches.
Lighthouse Beach is busy and there are persistent touts and hawkers — that is a fair criticism. Samudra beach and the northern end are considerably calmer, and Kovalam remains the most convenient beach base in Kerala.
