Eravikulam National Park
A high shola-grassland park above Munnar holding the largest surviving population of the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat found only in the Western Ghats. It is the most reliable large-mammal sighting in Kerala — the tahr are habituated and often graze within metres of the visitor path — and Anamudi, the highest peak in south India, rises within its boundary.

What to see
How to reach
From Munnar
- About 13 km from Munnar town, roughly 30 minutes by road
- Private vehicles stop at the base; a compulsory government shuttle bus covers the last stretch
- Autos and taxis from Munnar are readily available
When to visit
Because it never closes, Eravikulam National Park rewards the early and the late. Arrive at sunrise (or after sunset, when the gates are lit) for empty tunnels and soft light. Mid-morning to afternoon is shoulder-to-shoulder at the lower gates — but the crowds thin dramatically beyond the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, so keep climbing for the shot and the silence.
Timing
- September to January is most comfortable and reliably clear
- Closed roughly February to March for the tahr calving season — dates are set annually
- Arrive at opening; entry is capped and afternoon cloud obscures the views
- Mornings are cold at this altitude — bring a layer
Practical tips
Rules & practicalities
- Entry numbers are capped daily and tickets sell out in season — arrive early
- Access is by government shuttle only; you cannot drive to the zone
- Plastic bottles may be restricted or deposited at entry
- Stay on the marked path — this is a protected habitat, not a zoo
- Sightings are never guaranteed, though tahr are seen on most visits
