Periyar Tiger Reserve

A reserve built around a lake created by a dam in the 1890s, where the drowned forest still stands as bleached trunks in the water. Set expectations honestly: this is elephants, gaur, sambar and outstanding birdlife seen mostly from a boat. Tigers are present and effectively never seen — Periyar is a tiger reserve by designation, not a tiger-sighting destination.

  • The entrance is at Kumily, walkable from most Thekkady hotels
  • About 4.5 hrs by road from Kochi, 4 hrs from Madurai
  • Private vehicles cannot enter the core zone — access is by boat or on foot with a guide

When to visit

Because it never closes, Periyar Tiger Reserve rewards the early and the late. Arrive at sunrise (or after sunset, when the gates are lit) for empty tunnels and soft light. Mid-morning to afternoon is shoulder-to-shoulder at the lower gates — but the crowds thin dramatically beyond the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, so keep climbing for the shot and the silence.

  • April and May are hot but sightings improve as animals come to water
  • The dawn boat slot is materially better than later departures
  • Monsoon reduces activities and can suspend boating in poor weather

Almost certainly not, and any operator implying otherwise is not being straight with you. Tigers are present but the forest is dense and sightings are extremely rare. Come for elephants, gaur and birdlife, all of which are reliable, and treat anything else as a bonus.
Elephants at the water are common on the dawn boat, along with gaur, sambar, wild boar and langur. The birdlife is excellent — great hornbill, darters and kingfishers among them. No sighting is ever guaranteed.
Tickets are capped per slot and released through the forest department. They sell out in season, so book the day before at the latest and take the first departure, which is materially better for wildlife. This is a ticket, not a permit.
