Why Thekkady
Thekkady is Kerala’s wildlife stop, built around the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the lake at its centre. Set expectations correctly: this is elephants, gaur and dense forest seen mostly from a boat, not the reliable tiger sightings of Madhya Pradesh. The spice plantations around Kumily are the other half of the reason to come.

- There is no railway and no airstrip at Thekkady

- Kumily town and the reserve entrance are walkable from most hotels
- Autos cover the short distances; a car is needed only for plantations further out
- Private vehicles cannot enter the core reserve — access is by boat or on foot with a guide

Worth knowing
- Boat tickets are capped and sell out — book the first slot the day before
- The dawn slot is materially better for wildlife than later ones
- Sightings are never guaranteed; elephants are common, tigers effectively never seen
- Evenings are cool at around 900 m — bring a layer
Who it suits
- Good for families: the boat is easy and the plantations interest children
- Manageable for older travellers, though forest walks are optional and uneven
- Couples do well — plantation stays are quiet and genuinely romantic
- Not for anyone expecting big-cat safaris; go to Madhya Pradesh for that

Elephants and gaur are common on the dawn boat trip, and sambar, langur and abundant birdlife are near-certain. Tigers are present but effectively never seen — Periyar is a tiger reserve by designation rather than a tiger-sighting destination. Come for forest and elephants and you will not be disappointed.
Two nights. That gives one dawn boat safari plus a full day for a plantation tour and a forest walk. A single night means arriving after a long drive and leaving before the good morning slot.
Tickets are capped per slot and released through the forest department, and the early slots sell out. Book the day before at the latest, and take the first departure — it is materially better for wildlife. This is a park booking, not a permit; Kerala requires no travel permit.
October to March is most comfortable. April and May are hotter but sightings improve as animals concentrate at the lake. The monsoon from June to September is green and quiet, though forest activities are curtailed.
Yes. The boat safari is easy and short, spice plantations are hands-on, and the martial arts show holds children. The forest walks are optional and can be skipped entirely.
This is a personal decision and worth thinking about before you arrive. Captive-elephant activities are widely offered around Kumily; many travellers now decline them on welfare grounds and choose plantation walks or the boat instead. We do not recommend or arrange them.
It sits naturally between Munnar and the backwaters — Munnar is 3.5 hours north, Alleppey 4 hours west. The standard Kerala circuit runs Kochi, backwaters, Thekkady, Munnar, and Thekkady is where the hill half begins.
