The building is the exhibit

The Governor of Madras appointed Robert Chisholm, the Madras government’s consulting architect, to design a museum for Trivandrum in 1872. It opened in 1880 and took the name of Francis Napier, 10th Lord Napier, the governor who commissioned it. What Chisholm produced is an Indo-Saracenic building that borrows from Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Gothic traditions at once — a gothic roof, minarets, and a banded polychrome exterior that people photograph long before they go in.

What to See

What there is to see

A small collection in a remarkable envelope, in a park with the zoo and two other galleries.

🏛️ The exterior

  • The banded facade, the gothic roof and the minarets are the reason the building is a city landmark
  • It reads differently from every corner of the park, and the walk round it is part of the visit

🌬️ The ventilation

  • The building has no air conditioning and has never needed it — the section and the openings do the work
  • A windowless annex added in 2016 had mould, insects and corrosion problems, which made the point rather sharply

🎺 The bandstand

  • It has concealed speakers and its own acoustics
  • The Travancore Nair Brigade band played here on Fridays; later the police band played on Saturdays

  • Bronzes, ivories, temple carvings, a ceremonial chariot and South Indian musical instruments
  • The Sri Chitra Art Gallery and the zoo share the same park and the same ticket queue

It is in the museum park at the northern end of the city, well away from the temple quarter.

  • Around half an hour, and Trivandrum airport is roughly fifteen minutes from the museum

Frequently asked

Mondays and Wednesday forenoons, plus 26 January, 15 August, Thiruvonam and Mahanavami. The Wednesday morning closure is the one that catches people, because a last-morning museum stop is exactly when you would arrive. Opening hours are 10.00 to 16.45.
It is not, and it never has been. Chisholm’s section and openings ventilate it well enough that the absence has not been a problem for well over a century. The point was made unintentionally in 2016, when a windowless annex was added and promptly developed mould, insects and corrosion — the new building needed what the old one does without.
Yes, and more so than the size of the collection suggests, because the building is the thing. It is also the closest of Trivandrum’s three sights to the airport and the only one with no entry restrictions, so on a departure morning it is the one that reliably works.
