Madurai
The temple city of southern Tamil Nadu — the painted towers of Meenakshi Amman Temple, a Nayak palace, and the starting point for Rameswaram and the south.
Madurai
Madurai is a temple city in southern Tamil Nadu, and everything in it is arranged around the Meenakshi Amman Temple. It is also the usual starting point for the temple route to Rameswaram and Kanyakumari, and for Thekkady and Kodaikanal.

What Madurai is for
The temple is the reason to come; the palace, the museum and the surrounding temples fill a second day.
At the temple
- The towers. The painted gopurams rise above the old city and can be seen from far across it.
- The Thousand-Pillar Hall. Its pillars carry sculpture, including eight forms of the goddess Shakti, and there are musical pillars that sound different notes when tapped.
- Go early. Tamil Nadu Tourism names early morning as the best time to visit. Follow the temple's posted rules and dress code.
Elsewhere in the city
- Thirumalai Nayak Palace. The entrance gate, main hall and dance hall survive; a light-and-sound show of about half an hour recounts the king's story.
- Gandhi Memorial Museum. Established in 1959 as one of five Gandhi museums in India, in the old palace of Rani Mangammal.
- Other temples. The Koodal Azhagar and Thirumohoor Kalamegaperumal temples are in the city; Azhagar Kovil lies about 21 km to the north-west, and Thirupparankundram is nearby.

Arriving & getting around

- Madurai Airport is about 12 km from the city. Madurai Junction is the main railway station and is about 2 km from Thirumalai Nayak Palace.
- Thekkady is about 115 km from Madurai, and Kodaikanal is a nearby hill station. Rameswaram and Kanyakumari are reached by road or rail; allow a long day for each.
Plan around the temple
Timing matters more than season at Madurai.
The temple's most celebrated festival, with the Thirukalyanam, the divine wedding, drawing large crowds. Book early if your dates coincide.
The best time to visit the temple, per Tamil Nadu Tourism. Check current opening arrangements on the day.
A five-day programme is held each year around Gandhi Jayanti.
How to be a good guest
Madurai is a living temple city, not a museum.
Etiquette
- Follow the temple's posted rules, including dress code and footwear, and the instructions of staff.
- Ask before photographing people, and expect crowds on festival days.
Insider tips
- Start at the temple. Everything else can be arranged around it.
- Check opening arrangements on the day; hours differ between sources and change on festival days.
- Allow a long day for Rameswaram or Kanyakumari rather than a quick detour.
