The island

- The Pamban bridges themselves — the new lift bridge and the 1914 one beside it, which is a sight in its own right.
- Agnitheertham, the beach directly behind the temple where pilgrims bathe before entering.
- Kothandaramaswamy temple, on the road to Dhanushkodi, the only structure to survive the 1964 cyclone.

- RAIL SERVICE IS RESTORED. The New Pamban Bridge opened on 6 April 2025 and trains reach Rameswaram again after the 1914 bridge closed in December 2022.
- Madurai (IXM) is the nearest airport, about 170 km and roughly four hours by road.
- The road bridge carries vehicles across from Mandapam on the mainland.
- Madurai to Rameswaram is not a day trip — 170 km each way. Our research rejects it and so do we.
On the island
- The temple is central and the town around it is walkable.
- Dhanushkodi is about 18 km east, and private vehicles reach a checkpoint only — the final stretch is by government-approved jeep or on foot.
- Autos and taxis serve the island; agree fares first.
The New Pamban Bridge — and why older advice is wrong
- THE NEW PAMBAN BRIDGE OPENED ON 6 APRIL 2025 and rail services to Rameswaram run over it. Any guidance written before that date is out of date on this point.
- It is India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge, about 2.05 km long, with a lift span that raises to let vessels pass beneath.
- The 1914 bridge it replaced was closed in December 2022 on safety grounds, which is why sources from 2023 and 2024 describe Rameswaram as having no train.
- The road bridge alongside was never closed and continues to carry all vehicle traffic across the channel.
- Check current train services before relying on a specific one. Services and timings on a newly reopened line change, and we publish none.
- Madurai (IXM) is the nearest airport, roughly 170 km and about four hours by road.
- The crossing itself is worth being awake for, by road or rail — open sea on both sides for the length of it.

What shapes it
- Pilgrimage, overwhelmingly. Ramanathaswamy's dual status — Char Dham and Jyotirlinga — brings pilgrims from across India rather than from Tamil Nadu alone.
- The Ramayana associations run through the island: the bridge to Lanka, the worship of Shiva by Rama, the naming of the theerthams.
- Fishing is the other economy, and the Gulf of Mannar's fisheries and the international boundary with Sri Lanka shape a great deal of local life.
- A P J Abdul Kalam was from here, and his memorial is on the island.
What to eat
- Coastal fish, though the town is more vegetarian than the coast around it because of the pilgrimage economy.
- The banana-leaf meal, widely available and cheap.
- Temple prasadam, which is worship rather than food.
- There is very little aimed at visitors and we would rather say so.

At the temple
- Dress modestly, footwear off; men may be asked to remove upper garments, which is normal Tamil practice
- The 22 theerthams involve being doused with water at each — carry a change of clothes if you intend to do the sequence, and expect to be wet
- Photography is restricted inside and forbidden in the sanctum. Ask; never photograph anyone at worship or at the theerthams
- Sanctum access for non-Hindus varies between Tamil temples and the position changes. Ask at the gate — we assume nothing
- The corridor is open to walk and is the single most photographed thing on the island
Dhanushkodi and the sea
- Check the access position before setting out. An e-pass has been directed, private vehicles stop at a checkpoint and access closes around 5pm
- The final stretch is by government-approved jeep or on foot. Do not expect to drive to the tip
- This is an open sea between two landmasses. Currents at the tip are strong and there is no patrol. Take local advice and do not assume
- Agnitheertham behind the temple is a ritual bathing beach, not a swimming one — behave accordingly

- Do not day-trip from Madurai. Four hours each way for a pilgrimage island that deserves a night
- Accommodation is pilgrimage accommodation — functional and close to the temple
- Carry cash for offerings, jeeps, autos and footwear deposits

No, and our research explicitly rejects the route. It is about 170 kilometres and four hours each way, which consumes the whole day and leaves an hour or two on an island that deserves a night. Rameswaram after the day-trippers have left is a genuinely different place, and the temple's evening ritual is the reason to be there.
Wells within the Ramanathaswamy temple at which pilgrims are ritually bathed in sequence, each associated with a different significance. Doing the full round means being doused with water twenty-two times, so carry a change of clothes if you intend it. It is a devotional practice rather than an activity, and the theertham areas should not be photographed.

Agnitheertham behind the temple is a ritual bathing beach rather than a swimming one. The 1964 cyclone that destroyed Dhanushkodi is the clearest available statement about what this sea can do.
One night at minimum and two if the Gulf of Mannar interests you. One night gives you the temple twice — afternoon and evening ritual — and a Dhanushkodi morning. A second is only worth it if permits and operators align for the marine park, which cannot be assumed. There is no third night's worth of sightseeing here.
