Uttarakhand
Three quite different trips in one state: the river towns, the tiger forests of the terai, and the quiet Kumaon hills above them.
Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand splits into Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east, and into three distinct travel propositions. Rishikesh and Haridwar sit where the Ganges emerges onto the plains — ashrams, evening aarti, and the country’s best-known white water. Jim Corbett, in the terai grassland below, is India’s oldest national park. Above both, the Kumaon hills hold orchard villages and Himalayan views with a fraction of Himachal’s traffic. The Char Dham pilgrimage route runs through the high Garhwal valleys on a short seasonal window.

The Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand
Season shapes Uttarakhand more than any other planning decision. Here is what each window actually gives you.
Reaching & Crossing Uttarakhand
How to arrive, and how to move once you are here.
Getting there
- Dehradun (DED) for Rishikesh, Haridwar and Garhwal.
- Pantnagar (PGH) for Corbett and Kumaon; Kathgodam is the equivalent railhead.
- Road and rail from Delhi are quick enough that Rishikesh works as a long weekend.
Getting around
- Private car with driver; hill roads are winding and best not driven after dark.
- Corbett zones are allocated by permit — the park is not a drive-in.
- Kumaon distances look short and take much longer than the map suggests.
A Route Through Uttarakhand
Rishikesh
Aarti on the river, a morning yoga session, and rafting or a riverside walk depending on the season.
Jim Corbett
Four drives across two zones, plus a naturalist walk in the buffer. Sightings are fortunate, never scheduled.
Kumaon
Binsar or Almora — orchard stays, forest paths and the Himalaya on the horizon at first light.
Char Dham
Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath over 10–12 nights, roughly May to October, with altitude planned properly.
