Tenryu-ji
A garden laid out seven hundred years ago that has never been redesigned, borrowing the Arashiyama mountains as its backdrop — and the bamboo grove is its back gate.
The garden is the original
Tenryu-ji was founded in 1339 and the buildings have burned and been rebuilt repeatedly, but the Sogenchi garden in front of them is the one Muso Soseki laid out at the beginning and it has survived essentially unaltered — which makes it one of the oldest gardens in Japan in its original form. It uses shakkei, borrowed scenery: the Arashiyama hills behind are composed into the design as if they were part of it. The temple’s north gate opens directly onto the bamboo grove, which is why the two are almost always visited together.
