Kansai
The historic west of Japan — imperial Kyoto, kitchen-of-the-nation Osaka and ancient Nara, all within an hour of each other.
The cultural cradle of Japan
Kansai (the Kinki region) is where Japanese civilisation grew up. Within a triangle barely an hour wide sit Kyoto's thousand temples, Osaka's roaring food streets, Nara's Great Buddha and ancient deer park, Kobe's port and beef, and Himeji's white castle — the finest in the country. One base, a rail pass and a week is all it takes to see the soul of old Japan.

Where to go in Kansai
Three cities, three moods — and they're all a short train apart.
Old Japan, concentrated
Nowhere else packs so much of Japan into so small a space. Climb the vermillion gates of Fushimi Inari, lose an afternoon in the Arashiyama bamboo, eat your way through Osaka's Dotonbori, bow to the deer of Nara, and stand before the flawless white keep of Himeji Castle.
A region for every season
Kansai shines in the shoulder seasons. Cherry blossom sweeps through in early April, the maples of the temples blaze in November, and the in-between months bring mild weather and thinner crowds. Summers are hot and humid; winters cold, clear and quiet.
