Naramachi
The old merchant quarter south of the park, where red cloth monkeys hang outside the houses to take on their occupants’ misfortune.
Where Nara actually lives
Naramachi grew up on the grounds of a former temple precinct and became the town’s merchant quarter, and its narrow lanes of machiya townhouses survive largely intact. The buildings are deep and narrow — taxed on frontage, so built backwards — and several are open to walk through. Outside many of them hang bundles of red cloth monkeys, migawari-zaru, which are said to take on misfortune in place of the household. Almost every visitor to Nara sees only the deer park; this is ten minutes away and is where the town is.
