You take your shoes off at the door and walk through water in the dark. teamLab Planets is less an exhibition than something that happens to you.
Barefoot, and mostly in water
teamLab Planets is a digital art installation you walk through without shoes, much of it ankle-deep in water, some of it in total darkness with projections responding to where you stand. There is no set route and nothing is behind glass. It works because it removes the distance between viewer and work — you are inside the piece, and the piece reacts. It is the most-booked attraction in Tokyo for international visitors, which means the only real planning question is which slot you can get.

What you walk through
A sequence of rooms rather than a gallery, and the order is fixed.
💧 Water areas
- A knee-deep room where projected koi scatter as you move
- A dark waterfall you climb toward
🌸 Garden areas
- A moss garden of reflective ovoids that change colour
- An orchid room where flowers rise and fall around you
🪞 Infinity rooms
- Mirrored floors and ceilings — wear something you are comfortable in
- Skirts and shorts are the practical consideration
Getting to Toyosu
It is on the bay side, away from the main sightseeing districts.
🚇 By train
- Shin-Toyosu on the Yurikamome line, a two-minute walk
- Toyosu on the Yurakucho line, about ten minutes
🕐 Journey
- About 25 minutes from Tokyo station
- About 35 minutes from Shinjuku

- Timed entry, online in advance — walk-ups are rarely possible
When to book
Indoors, so weather is irrelevant. Crowd level is everything.

- Weekday mornings, first slots of the day
- Avoid weekends and Japanese public holidays entirely
⏱ Duration
- Ninety minutes is comfortable; two hours if you linger
- There is no time limit once inside
👕 Practical
- Wear something you can roll above the knee
- Lockers are provided and shoes are stored at the entrance
