The Bahamas sells itself on a colour. The shallow banks between the islands produce a turquoise that genuinely does look edited, and for a great many visitors that is the whole holiday and a perfectly good one. But treating the country as a single beach misses how spread out and how different its islands are — this is a chain running hundreds of kilometres, and the island you choose decides the trip far more than the season does.
Nassau is where most people land and the part most people underrate. Parliament Square is a set of pink Georgian government buildings with black louvred shutters, built when this was a British colonial capital, and the House of Assembly still sits in them. Forts above the town, a staircase cut down through limestone, and a working harbour give the city more to walk than its reputation suggests.
Beyond New Providence the country changes character island by island. The Exumas are a string of cays with a protected marine park at their centre. Andros is the largest island and the least developed, honeycombed with blue holes and edged by a barrier reef. Harbour Island keeps a pastel New England-style town above a pink-sand shore. Same country, four genuinely different holidays.

The Bahamas Department of Immigration publishes its entry requirements plainly: "All persons entering The Bahamas require a Bahamian visa except the following persons", followed by the exempt categories. Those categories include United States citizens, US alien residents holding Alien Registration Cards, Canadian citizens and landed immigrants, United Kingdom citizens, and British Commonwealth citizens — but the Commonwealth exemption carries an explicit carve-out: "with the exception of the following countries: Pakistan. Cameroon. Mozambique. India. Nigeria. Ghana." India is named directly. An ordinary Indian passport therefore needs a Bahamian visa arranged before travel, and the fact that India is a Commonwealth member does not change that. It is worth saying clearly, because the Commonwealth exemption is exactly the thing an Indian traveller might reasonably expect to rely on here.
The Department of Immigration lists India explicitly among the Commonwealth countries excluded from the visa exemption. Do not assume Commonwealth membership carries you in.
All visitors must hold a return or onward ticket and a valid travel document, and may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds on arrival.
