North America does not reward the itinerary that tries to see all of it. The distance from New York to the Grand Canyon is a flight, not a drive; Canada alone spans five and a half time zones. The travellers who enjoy it most pick one region and give it room — the desert Southwest, the Pacific coast, the Rockies, New England in autumn — and let the scale become the point rather than the obstacle.
It is also more than three countries. South of the Rio Grande the continent turns into Mexico’s pyramids and colonial cities, the cloud forests and volcanoes of Central America, and the reefs and old ports of the Caribbean — all of it a different journey from the road trips and skylines further north.

The national parks of the West
The idea of the national park began here, and the western parks are still the reason many people cross an ocean. They are close enough together to combine on one route and different enough that none of them feels like a repeat — canyon country, geothermal basins, granite valleys and the high Rockies, joined by some of the most enjoyable driving anywhere.
A continent of real seasons
North America has genuine seasons, and they change the trip completely rather than slightly. The parks and the northern cities open up from late spring to early autumn, when the days are long and the mountain roads are clear. Autumn brings the New England and eastern Canadian colour. Winter is not a compromise season here — it is when the skiing, the northern lights and the Christmas cities are at their best. Mexico and the Caribbean run the other way, at their driest and calmest through the northern winter.
