New York and the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Orlando, Hawaii and the Rockies — the United States is not one holiday but a dozen, and the good trips choose one coast, one region and one pace.

Why the United States

A continent that calls itself
a country

The United States is the size of a continent and behaves like one. New York to Los Angeles is a six-hour flight across four time zones; the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Yosemite are each a day's drive from the nearest big city, in three different directions. The first thing to understand is that nobody sees America in one trip. Every good itinerary picks a coast, or a region, and gives it room.

For Indian travellers it is also one of the most familiar far-away countries there is. Non-stop flights run from Delhi and Mumbai to both coasts, English is spoken everywhere, vegetarian food is easy in every city, and the Indian diaspora is large enough that Edison, Devon Avenue and the Bay Area have Indian high streets of their own. Many trips begin with family — a graduation, a new grandchild, a wedding in New Jersey — and grow a holiday around it.

What the country does better than almost anywhere else is scale. The national parks are enormous and genuinely wild, the cities are vertical and loud, the road trips are measured in days, and Hawaii is a tropical archipelago five hours out into the Pacific that happens to use the same currency. The visa takes patience; the country itself is easy.

Why Travellers Choose the United States
New York: Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Broadway and the museums — the city everyone already knows.
The national parks: the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion — landscapes on a scale nothing in Europe matches.
California: San Francisco, Highway 1 down the Big Sur coast, Los Angeles and the Napa vineyards.
Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal and the Kennedy Space Center — the most complete family destination in the world.
Hawaii: volcanoes, surf and a Pacific honeymoon on Maui or Oahu, with no second visa needed.
Familiarity: non-stop flights from Delhi and Mumbai, English everywhere, Indian food in every city.

Best Time to Visit

When is your America?

A country this wide has every climate at once: Florida is warm in January, Yellowstone is shut, and the desert is lethal in July. The season follows the region, not the calendar.

March – May
Blossom, Waterfalls and the Desert
Washington's cherry blossom in late March and early April, Yosemite's waterfalls at full force in May, and the Southwest canyons at comfortable temperatures before the summer heat. New York is mild and the parks are not yet crowded. The best window for a first trip that mixes cities and landscape.
Spring
June – August
The Parks Open, the Crowds Arrive
The only season for Yellowstone, Glacier and Alaska, with long daylight and every road open. It is also peak season everywhere, hurricane season begins in Florida, and the Southwest deserts and inner canyon are dangerously hot. Book the park lodges the year before.
Summer
September – October
Fall Colour and Clear Skies
New England and upstate New York turn red and gold from late September into mid-October, California has its harvest and its warmest sea, and the canyons cool down again. Fewer people than summer, better prices, and the Diwali school break falls inside it. The best all-round month is September.
Autumn
November – February
Snow in the North, Sun in the South
New York at Christmas — the tree, the windows, the ice rinks — is a trip in itself, and Colorado and Utah have serious skiing. Florida, Hawaii and the Arizona desert are at their most pleasant. Yellowstone closes to cars, and the Northeast can be bitterly cold; pack for it or head south.

Visa for Indian Travellers

US visa — what you need to know

Indian passport holders need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa — India is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so ESTA does not apply. The application is made online on Form DS-160, the fee is paid in India, fingerprints and a photograph are taken at a Visa Application Centre, and an interview follows at the US Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

The wait for an interview is the whole timeline

The State Department states plainly that wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season and visa category, and that you should apply early. Its India portal encourages applicants to apply at least three months before the intended date of travel, and says that although processing is typically seven to ten working days, individual cases vary. The live wait at each post is published on the portal and changes constantly, which is why no figure is written here — check it before you book anything non-refundable. Expedited appointments exist but are, in the embassy's words, very limited.

Two appointments, both in person

First a Visa Application Centre appointment, where fingerprints and a digital photograph are collected — the portal requires it at least two business days before the interview. Then the consular interview itself. Interviews are generally required, with limited exceptions, and a consular officer may require one of any applicant. Applicants aged fourteen to seventy-nine are fingerprinted. Family members can be scheduled together using the portal's dependent option.

What the officer is deciding

The interview establishes that you qualify under US law. Beyond the passport, DS-160 confirmation and fee receipt, the officer may ask for evidence of the purpose of your trip, your intent to leave the United States afterwards, and your ability to pay for it — employment and family ties are the usual proof. The State Department is explicit that a letter of invitation or an affidavit of support is not needed and is not one of the factors used in the decision. Some applications are placed in further administrative processing after the interview, which adds time.

A visa is not entry

The State Department states that a visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. It allows you to travel to a port of entry, where a Customs and Border Protection officer decides whether to admit you and for how long, recorded on an admission stamp or Form I-94. Overstaying that date, not the visa's expiry date, is what causes trouble on the next trip.

Live Traveller Handles Your Visa

For all United States journeys we design, we prepare your complete visa documentation package — the forms, the supporting documents, the sequence of submission. Our visa specialists help travellers prepare complete applications with careful document guidance. Final visa decisions always remain with the relevant authorities.

Before you apply
Passport valid at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States
A separate DS-160 for every traveller, children included, submitted online and valid for one year
The DS-160 confirmation page — its barcode number is needed to book, and it must match at the appointment
Fee receipt: the receipt is valid for 365 days for scheduling the appointment
A photograph uploaded to the DS-160; bring a printed one only if the upload failed
Evidence of employment, family ties and funds, in case the officer asks
Check the current interview wait at your chosen post on the portal before buying tickets
Renewing a previous US visa? The portal describes an interview-waiver route — check its eligibility page
Fee and processing, as the State Department publishes them
The visa application fee for a B visitor visa is published by the State Department as US$185.00, non-refundable whether or not a visa is issued, and payable in India in rupees by NEFT, UPI, debit or credit card, or cash at the banks named on the portal; the embassy states that its consular exchange rate changed on 25 May 2026 to 98 rupees to the dollar. A visa issuance fee may apply depending on nationality, and the reciprocity schedule for India should be checked at the time of application. On timing, the State Department says only that interview wait times vary by location, season and visa category and that you should apply early; its India portal encourages applying at least three months before travel and describes processing after the interview as typically seven to ten working days, with individual cases varying. None of that is a guaranteed end-to-end timeline: appointment availability, the separate biometric visit, any administrative processing and the return of your passport all sit outside it. Fees and timeframes are set by the authorities and change; confirm both when you apply. Final visa and entry decisions remain with the US authorities.
Food & dining in the United States
Regional, not national — New York pizza and bagels, Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, Maine lobster rolls, Louisiana gumbo and beignets, Chicago deep-dish. Eat what the region does.
Diners and brunch — the pancakes-and-eggs breakfast, the bottomless coffee, the weekend brunch queue. Portions are large; sharing is normal.
Tex-Mex and taquerias — tacos, burritos and enchiladas are everywhere in the South and West and are the easiest cheap meal in the country, with good vegetarian options.
Wine and craft beer — Napa and Sonoma for the vineyards, and every city has its own breweries. The drinking age is twenty-one and photo ID is asked for routinely.
Tipping and tax — menu prices exclude sales tax, which is added at the till and varies by state, and a tip of fifteen to twenty per cent is customary in sit-down restaurants. Budget for both.
Indian food — Edison and Jersey City in New Jersey, Devon Avenue in Chicago, Artesia in Los Angeles, Sunnyvale and Fremont in the Bay Area, Hillcroft in Houston: whole streets of it, plus an Indian restaurant in most mid-sized towns.
For vegetarians — easy. Menus label vegetarian and vegan dishes, plant-based burgers are on fast-food menus, and salad, grain-bowl and Mexican chains are everywhere. Ask about chicken stock in soups and rice, and lard in beans, at older Southern and Mexican places.
Water and coffee — tap water is safe across the country and served free with meals. Coffee is large, weak and constant; espresso is a city thing.
Getting around the United States
Domestic flights: The only practical way between regions — New York to Los Angeles is six hours in the air. Hub-to-hub fares are frequent; book the checked bag separately.
Self-drive: The Southwest, California and the parks are road trips. Driving is on the right, cars are automatic, and an Indian licence with your passport is accepted for short visits in most states — carry an International Driving Permit as well. Distances are long; petrol is sold by the gallon.
Amtrak: Excellent between Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington on the Northeast Corridor. Elsewhere it is scenic rather than fast; the long-distance trains are a holiday, not transport.
In the cities: New York's subway, Washington's Metro, Chicago's L and San Francisco's BART and cable cars all work, with tap-to-pay on most. Los Angeles, Houston and Orlando need a car or rideshare.
Rideshare: Uber and Lyft cover every city and airport and are the default for short hops; Indian app accounts work with a roaming or local number.
Travel Tips

Travel America intelligently

The country is easy once you are in it. The visa, the distances and the size of the bill are what catch Indian travellers out.

Do's
Start the visa first and check the interview wait at your post before you buy a ticket.
Pick one coast or one region. New York and California in eight days is two bad trips, not one good one.
Buy proper travel medical insurance. American healthcare is excellent and extraordinarily expensive without it.
Book national park lodges, Yosemite and Yellowstone especially, many months ahead; some parks have needed timed-entry reservations in peak season.
Tip in restaurants, taxis and hotels — it is wages, not a bonus.
Carry your passport when you go out in the evening; bars and shops ask for ID regardless of age.
Get a US eSIM or prepaid SIM on landing; Indian roaming in the US is expensive and unlimited local data is cheap.
Keep your Form I-94 admission date in mind — it, not the visa, is the date you must leave by.
Don'ts
Don't expect UPI to work. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and a little cash covers the rest.
Don't treat the menu price as the price. Sales tax and the tip come on top.
Don't drive the Southwest or the Southern deserts in high summer without water, a full tank and an early start.
Don't book non-refundable flights before the visa is in your passport.
Don't cross to the Canadian side of Niagara without a Canadian visa — it is a separate country and a separate application.
Don't carry cannabis across state lines or into an airport, however legal it is where you bought it — federal law still applies.
Don't underestimate the winter. New York and Chicago in January are colder than anywhere in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

United States travel FAQ

The questions Indian travellers ask most often before booking America.

Yes. India is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so ESTA does not apply, and Indian passport holders apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa. The steps are an online DS-160 for every traveller including children, payment of the fee in India, a Visa Application Centre appointment for fingerprints and a photograph, and an interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. The State Department publishes the B visa application fee as US$185, non-refundable. Final visa and entry decisions remain with the US authorities.
Earlier than for almost any other country. The State Department states that interview wait times vary by location, season and visa category and that you should apply early; its India portal encourages applying at least three months before the intended travel date. The current wait at each post is published live on the portal and changes constantly, so check it before buying tickets rather than relying on anything you read elsewhere. Processing after the interview is described as typically seven to ten working days, but individual cases vary and some go into further administrative processing.
It depends entirely on the region. April to June and September to October are the best all-round windows — comfortable in the cities, the canyons cool, Yosemite's waterfalls full in May and New England's colour in October. Summer is the only season for Yellowstone and Alaska but it is peak season and the desert is dangerously hot. Winter is for New York at Christmas, skiing in the Rockies, and warm weather in Florida, Hawaii and Arizona.
Ten to fourteen nights for one coast plus one region. The two classic first trips are New York with Washington and Niagara, or San Francisco down the coast to Los Angeles with the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas added. Families usually choose Orlando with Miami. Trying to do both coasts in under two weeks means spending the holiday in airports; if you have three weeks, a coast-to-coast route with a domestic flight in the middle works well.
For a short visit, generally yes — most states accept a valid Indian licence with your passport, and hire companies will rent to you on it, though an International Driving Permit alongside it avoids questions and is required by some. Driving is on the right, cars are automatic, roads are excellent and well signed, and distances are long: the Grand Canyon is four hours from Las Vegas, Los Angeles seven from San Francisco by the fast road. Speed limits are enforced, and a car is unnecessary in New York, Boston, Washington and Chicago.
Very. American menus label vegetarian and vegan dishes as a matter of course, plant-based burgers are on fast-food menus, Mexican food is everywhere and easily made vegetarian, and every city has salad and grain-bowl chains. The Indian diaspora means whole streets of Indian restaurants and grocers in New Jersey, Chicago, the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Houston, and an Indian restaurant in most mid-sized towns. The only care needed is with chicken stock in soups and rice and lard in beans at traditional Southern and Mexican places — ask.
The places tourists go are generally safe with ordinary big-city care — watch bags on the subway, use registered taxis or apps at night, and be sensible about which neighbourhoods you wander into after dark. The emergency number is 911. Insurance is not optional: American medical care is superb and, without cover, ruinously expensive; a proper travel medical policy is the single most important thing to buy after the visa. Check your government's current travel advice before you travel.
The America You Come For

A country for every kind
of traveller

The regions are thousands of kilometres apart and each is a holiday in itself. These are the combinations that work rather than a list of everything in the country.

🗽
New York & the East Coast
Recommended: 5–7 Nights

Manhattan first — the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the museums, a Broadway show — then Washington's monuments and museums by train, and Niagara Falls if you want the set piece.

Statue of Liberty crown access is booked months ahead; pedestal tickets are easier
Washington, D.C. is under three hours from New York by Amtrak, and most of its museums are free
Niagara Falls is a flight or a long drive from New York; the Canadian side needs a Canadian visa
Walkable, subway-connected and the one region where a car is a liability
🌉
California
Recommended: 7–9 Nights

San Francisco and the Golden Gate, the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur, Los Angeles and Hollywood, with Yosemite inland and Napa an hour north of the bay.

Yosemite's Tunnel View, Half Dome and the falls — the falls are fullest in May
Highway 1 is one of the great coast drives; sections close after landslides, so check before you plan around it
Napa and Sonoma for the vineyards, best in the September harvest
A car is essential outside San Francisco
🏜️
The Southwest Canyons
Recommended: 6–8 Nights

The Grand Canyon from the South Rim, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend at Page, Monument Valley, then Zion and Bryce Canyon in Utah — a loop from Las Vegas that is the classic American road trip.

The Grand Canyon is over 400 km long and about a mile deep; the South Rim is open all year
Antelope Canyon is on Navajo Nation land and visited by guided tour only
Zion's canyon shuttle and Bryce's hoodoos are a day apart
Summer is dangerously hot at low elevations; spring and autumn are the seasons
🎢
Orlando & Florida
Recommended: 6–8 Nights

Walt Disney World's four parks and Universal in Orlando, the Kennedy Space Center an hour east on the coast, and Miami and the Keys for the beach at the end.

Park tickets and dining are booked in advance; the crowds are real
Kennedy Space Center is a genuine day out, not a museum stop
Miami's South Beach and the Everglades airboats are two hours south
Hurricane season runs June to November and peaks in early autumn
🌺
Hawaii
Recommended: 6–8 Nights

Oahu for Waikiki, Pearl Harbor and the North Shore surf; Maui for the Road to Hana and sunrise on Haleakalā; the Big Island for a live volcano. The same visa, five to six hours out from California.

Haleakalā sunrise needs an advance reservation
Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial is timed-entry and free
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island for Kīlauea
The obvious American honeymoon, and it pairs with California
🦬
Yellowstone & the Rockies
Recommended: 5–7 Nights

The world's first national park — geysers, hot springs, bison and wolves — with Grand Teton next door and Jackson Hole as the base. Summer only for most travellers.

Yellowstone was designated in 1872
Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring and the Lamar Valley for wildlife
Most park roads close to cars from November to April
Lodges inside the park book out many months ahead
🎷
Chicago, Music & the South
Recommended: 5–7 Nights

Chicago's architecture and lakefront, then the music cities — Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans — for the America that is about food and sound rather than landscape.

Chicago's river architecture cruise and the Devon Avenue Indian quarter
Nashville for country music, Memphis for Graceland and the blues
New Orleans for the French Quarter, jazz and Creole cooking
Best in spring and autumn; the Southern summer is humid
👨‍👩‍👧
Family Visits, Made a Holiday
Recommended: 2–3 Weeks

A great many Indian trips start with relatives in New Jersey, the Bay Area, Texas or Chicago. We build the holiday around the family dates — a canyon loop from Dallas or Houston, a coast drive from San Jose, New York from Edison.

Family members can apply for visas together under the portal's dependent option
Domestic flights make a second region easy from any diaspora hub
Short-stay car hire, hotels and park tickets arranged around your own dates
Tell us where the family is and we plan outward from there
Not sure which America is yours?

Tell us how long you have, which coast you are drawn to, and whether family is part of the trip, and our travel designers will shape the route around it.

Start the visa

DS-160, fee, biometrics appointment, interview. The State Department says wait times vary and to apply early; its India portal suggests at least three months ahead.

02
Choose the region

One coast or one loop. The season follows the region — parks in summer, canyons in spring or autumn, Florida and Hawaii in winter.

03
Lock the scarce beds

Park lodges, Yosemite valley hotels, Orlando at school holidays and New York in December sell out earliest.

04
Then flights and the car

Non-stops from Delhi and Mumbai, a domestic hop if the trip has two regions, and a car for anywhere outside the Northeast.

Packing Guide

What to pack
for the United States

Pack for the region, not the country. A Hawaii suitcase and a January New York suitcase have almost nothing in common, and a Southwest road trip needs a third list again.

🏙️
Cities
Comfortable walking shoes — New York days run to fifteen kilometres
Layers; office and museum air-conditioning is fierce even in summer
One smart outfit for a Broadway show or a good dinner
A proper winter coat, hat and gloves from November to March in the Northeast
🏜️
Parks & road trips
Sun hat, high-factor sun cream and sunglasses for the canyons
Walking shoes with grip and a daypack for rim and valley trails
A refillable water bottle — park water is safe and shops are far apart
A warm layer for early mornings at altitude, even in July
🌴
Florida & Hawaii
Swimwear, reef-safe sun cream and a light rain jacket
Insect repellent for the Everglades and the Hana coast
Water shoes for rocky Hawaiian beaches
🔌
Practical
Type A/B plug adapter; the US is 120 volts, so check hair dryers and shavers are dual-voltage
Two payment cards with no foreign-transaction fee, and some dollars in small notes for tips
Your travel insurance policy and the visa in the passport you interviewed with
An International Driving Permit alongside your Indian licence if you are hiring a car
💡
American packing tip

Everything is available and cheap once you land — clothes, toiletries, chargers — so pack light and buy what the weather turns out to need. The one thing to bring from home is your medication, in its original packaging with the prescription.
