Chile
Chile runs from the Atacama in the north to Torres del Paine in the far south, so a single country covers high desert, vineyards, lakes and Patagonian wilderness.
A country shaped
like a road
Chile is roughly four thousand kilometres long and rarely more than two hundred wide, pinned between the Andes and the Pacific. That shape is the whole country in one fact: you travel it north to south, and the landscape changes completely as you go.
At the top is the Atacama, the driest desert on earth, where the attraction is salt flats, geysers and some of the clearest night skies anywhere. In the middle sit Santiago and the wine valleys, with the Andes on the skyline from the city. Further south the Lake District turns green and volcanic, and beyond it Patagonia opens into Torres del Paine. Out in the Pacific, five hours by air, Easter Island is a different world again.
For Indian travellers Chile works best as a pairing rather than a grand tour — the desert and Patagonia, or Santiago and the south. It is also the most straightforward South American country to combine with Argentina, since the two share both the Andes and the far south.
When is your Chile?
Chile spans desert, Mediterranean valleys, temperate forest and sub-Antarctic Patagonia, so the right month depends entirely on how far south you are going. There is no single best time for the country.

5 ways into Chile — drawn from this guide, not from a list that could describe anywhere.
The Atacama · Torres del Paine & Patagonia · Easter Island · Wine & Santiago — the parts of Chile this guide covers, each with its own reason to go and its own time of year.
Honeymoons · Lakes, Volcanoes & Family Travel — the shapes of trip Chile suits, and the one you pick changes where you go and when.
Year-round is the strongest window — good almost always. The rest of the year splits into November – March · Mar – May · Sep – Nov · December – March, and they are not interchangeable.
Domestic flights · Self-drive · Long-distance buses · Easter Island — how people actually move around here, which decides how much of the map a trip can hold.
Indian passport holders normally require a visa for Chile, applied for through the Chilean consulate covering their state.
Chile visa — what you need to know
Indian passport holders normally require a visa for Chile, applied for through the Chilean consulate covering their state. There is one significant exemption, and it is worth checking first because it removes the application entirely.
Indian citizens holding any type of US visa — including a Green Card, but excluding type C transit visas — with at least six months of validity remaining on arrival in Chile are exempt from obtaining a Chilean visa. The maximum stay is 90 days, and travellers must be able to show sufficient financial means for the trip.
The Chilean Embassy states that the visa process takes several weeks and may take up to six months. That is unusually long, and it should shape when you start rather than being discovered late. Applications are made through the online consular services platform.
For all Chile journeys we design, we prepare your complete visa documentation package — the forms, the supporting documents, the sequence of submission. Our visa specialists help travellers prepare complete applications with careful document guidance. Final visa decisions always remain with the relevant authorities.
The consular section in New Delhi covers northern and northeastern India. Applicants from other Indian states apply through the Consulate General in Mumbai. Entry rules change, and only the Chilean consulate can confirm what applies to your passport and travel dates — we do not publish visa fees here.
Meeting every published requirement does not guarantee that a visa is issued. Each application is assessed on its own merits by the relevant authority, which may request further documents or refuse an application without giving reasons. Live Traveller can prepare and check your documentation, but no agent or operator can promise an outcome — and you should treat anyone who does with caution. Book refundable arrangements until your visa is in hand.

Chile for every kind
of traveller
The regions are a long way apart and each suits a different trip. These are the combinations that work rather than a list of everything in the country.
Based in San Pedro de Atacama: salt flats, flamingo lagoons, the Valle de la Luna and the El Tatio geyser field at dawn.
The granite towers, glacial lakes and guanaco country of Chilean Patagonia, usually reached through Puerto Natales.
Rapa Nui, roughly five hours by air from Santiago — the moai, volcanic craters and one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world.
The Maipo, Casablanca and Colchagua valleys sit within easy reach of the capital, with the Andes as a backdrop to almost every tasting.
Chile suits couples who want dramatic landscape and good wine rather than a beach. The classic shape is desert, capital and far south.
The Lake District around Puerto Varas is the gentlest part of Chile — green, volcanic and far easier with children than Patagonia.
Tell us how long you have and whether you want desert, mountains or wine, and our travel designers will shape the route around it.
How far in advance
should you book Chile?
Two things drive the Chilean timeline: the short Patagonian season, and a visa process the embassy itself says may take up to six months.
A valid US visa may exempt you entirely. If not, the application is the longest lead item in the trip.
Desert and far south, or capital and lakes. The season follows the choice.
Torres del Paine lodges and Easter Island flights, in that order.
Chile's length means the domestic legs are what make the route work.
What to pack
for Chile
Chile asks a lot of one suitcase: a desert night, a Patagonian gale and a Santiago dinner can fall in the same week.
Layers everywhere, and a genuine windproof shell for the south. The Atacama is hot by day and genuinely cold after dark because of the altitude.
