How to choose

Choosing within Cultural Festivals

The practical consequence is that the crowd is the event. Streets close, transport thins out and accommodation in the centre goes months ahead, so the planning question is rarely "can I get there" but "where do I sleep and how do I move on the day". A festival you watch from a good vantage point at nine in the morning is a different trip from one you are caught inside at nine at night.

Several of these are also religious observances, and they appear in both collections here for that reason rather than to lengthen a list. Where a celebration is someone's faith as well as their tradition, the guidance in Religious Festivals applies to it too.

Cultural Festivals

A cultural festival is the one time a place performs its own identity in public, and it is the reason these dates are worth planning a trip around rather than catching by accident. What you are seeing is not staged for visitors: it is a city doing something it would do whether or not you came, which is exactly what makes it worth the journey and exactly why it asks something of you in return.
