Visa Guide

eVisa

A visa applied for and issued online, before you travel.

Overview

What is a eVisa?

An eVisa is a visa applied for online and issued electronically, usually arriving by email and linked to your passport number rather than pasted into it. It is a mechanism, not a purpose: an eVisa is still a tourist, business or transit visa underneath — it is simply how the permission was obtained.

Eligibility

Who it's for

Travellers going to a destination that has moved its process online. Whether that option exists is a decision each country makes for each category.

↔ Compared with Visa on Arrival

  • The clearest contrast on this hub: an eVisa is settled before you fly, a visa on arrival is settled after you land. One removes the uncertainty from the airport; the other keeps it there.

↔ Compared with Electronic travel authorisations

  • Some countries run an online pre-authorisation that is not a visa at all. It looks like an eVisa and is legally a different thing — check which one your destination operates.
How to Apply

The application process

How this type is obtained

By definition, online and in advance. The application is submitted before travel and the result is delivered electronically rather than as a physical sticker.

1. Worth knowing

An eVisa is normally tied to the passport used in the application, so renewing or replacing that passport between applying and travelling is the change most likely to cause trouble.

2. Worth knowing

Because the process is online, it attracts unofficial lookalike sites. Applying through the destination’s own official portal is the only way to be sure what you are paying for and who receives your data.

3. Worth knowing

Electronic issue makes approval feel instant. It is not guaranteed, and treating it as a formality is what leaves people without permission on the day of travel.

Always check the source

This page explains what the visa type means. It does not state what any country requires. Rules, costs and conditions are set by each destination and change without notice — always confirm the current requirements with that country’s official immigration authority or its embassy before you book or travel.

Many travellers do, and some airlines still ask to see a copy at check-in, but the requirement is set by the destination and the carrier.
Yes. It is an application like any other, and an online process does not make the outcome automatic.
