Visa Guide

Visa-Free

Entry without a visa — which is not the same as entry without conditions.

Overview

What is a Visa-Free?

Visa-free entry means a country admits certain travellers without requiring a visa at all. It is the absence of a visa rather than a type of one — but it is not the absence of rules. Visa-free arrivals are still subject to immigration control, to a permitted purpose, and usually to a limit on how long they may stay.

Eligibility

Who it's for

Travellers holding a passport a destination admits without a visa, for a purpose that arrangement covers. Both halves of that sentence matter.

↔ Compared with Visa on Arrival

  • A visa on arrival is still a visa, issued at a desk. Visa-free entry involves no visa at all, which is why the two are worth telling apart before you plan on either.

↔ Compared with eVisa

  • Some countries pair visa-free entry with a compulsory online pre-authorisation. It is not a visa, but it is not optional either.
How to Apply

The application process

How this type is obtained

Nothing is issued in advance. Permission is granted, or not, by the immigration officer at the border, on the same basis as any other arrival.

1. Worth knowing

Visa-free is a relationship between a passport and a destination, so it can differ for two people travelling together and can change at either end.

2. Worth knowing

The permitted purpose still applies. Visa-free almost always means visa-free for visiting, and rarely covers working or studying.

3. Worth knowing

It is the arrangement most likely to be assumed rather than checked, precisely because there is no application to remind you.

Always check the source

This page explains what the visa type means. It does not state what any country requires. Rules, costs and conditions are set by each destination and change without notice — always confirm the current requirements with that country’s official immigration authority or its embassy before you book or travel.
