Where to stay in Bali: Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu or Nusa Dua
Choosing a base in Bali? Compare Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua and Kuta by trip type, with transfer times from our itineraries and sample splits for 4, 6 and 7 nights.
The short answer
For most first-time visitors from India, the simplest plan is to split the stay: Ubud for rice terraces and culture, then one coast base. Indonesia Travel, the national tourism site, points first-time visitors to Seminyak, Ubud and Kuta: Seminyak for upscale dining, Ubud for culture and rice terraces, Kuta for beaches and shopping. Nusa Dua and Sanur are the calmer-water, family-friendly options, and Uluwatu is known for its cliffs and surf.
Bali is small on the map and slow on the road. Our Bali guide advises planning by drive time rather than distance and keeping the number of bases low. Transfer times below are taken from our package itineraries as read on 24 October 2026, measured from the airport and from Ubud, and they vary with traffic, so confirm them with your driver or hotel.
The bases at a glance
Five bases side by side, with transfer times where our itineraries give them.
| Base | Known for | Often suits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubud | Culture, rice terraces, yoga, rafting on the Ayung River | Couples, culture and nature lovers | No beach. Kuta to the Ubud area is about 1 hour 30 each way (our south-coast itinerary) |
| Seminyak (Canggu nearby) | Upmarket and polished, with luxury hotels and fine dining; Canggu is the surf-and-café area on a wide black-sand beach | Couples and friends who want dining and nightlife | Our itineraries do not include a Seminyak transfer, so ask your hotel for the airport and Ubud times. Check swimming conditions at your hotel’s stretch of beach |
| Uluwatu | Famous waves, cliffs and a cliffside temple with kecak dance performances | A scenic honeymoon finish | Airport about 45 minutes; Ubud two to three hours, depending on traffic (our honeymoon itinerary) |
| Nusa Dua and Sanur | Clear water, white sand and full resort facilities at Nusa Dua; calm water and sunrise views at Sanur | Families and travellers who want ease | Nusa Dua: airport about 30 minutes; Ubud about 1 hour 30 (our family itinerary). Sanur is the departure point for the Nusa Penida fast boat (about 45 minutes each way) |
| Kuta (airport side) | Beaches and shopping; less polished than Seminyak | A short four-night trip | Airport about 20 minutes plus traffic; Ubud area about 1 hour 30 (our south-coast itinerary) |
Ubud: stay for the landscape
Choose Ubud for rice terraces, temples and a slower pace. It works well as a base for day trips, and it is not a beach base, so pair it with a coast stay. Our Ubud page covers the sights.
Seminyak and Canggu: stay for the evenings
Seminyak is the polished, dining-led choice: Indonesia Travel describes luxury hotels and fine dining. Canggu is its looser, surf-and-café neighbour. Both suit travellers who want to walk out for dinner more than they want quiet.
From the airport: not verified. From Ubud: not verified. None of our itineraries stays in Seminyak, so we have no tested transfer time: ask your hotel for both before you book.
Uluwatu: stay for the view
Uluwatu, on the Bukit peninsula, is known for its waves and its cliffside temple. Our Bali honeymoon spends three nights in a cliff-top villa there after three in Ubud.
From the airport: about 45 minutes. From Ubud: two to three hours, depending on traffic through Denpasar (our honeymoon itinerary). Uluwatu is further down the peninsula than Nusa Dua, which is why its Ubud time is longer. The beaches sit at the foot of the cliffs and are reached by steps, and the itinerary notes they are not swimming beaches in every state of the tide, so ask your hotel about access if anyone has mobility needs.
Nusa Dua and Sanur: stay for ease
Nusa Dua is a resort area with calm water that suits families, according to Indonesia Travel. Our Bali family route spends four nights in a private-pool villa there.
From the airport: about 30 minutes. From Ubud: about 1 hour 30 (our family itinerary). The offshore reef breaks the swell, and the itinerary calls the lagoon the calmest swimming on the island; Tanjung Benoa, just north, is where the watersports run. Sanur is known for calm water and sunrise views. If your priority is a low-stress week, these are the natural places to look.
Sample splits
4 nights, short trip: one base in Kuta with day trips (the shape of our south-coast package), or 2 Ubud and 2 on the coast.
6 nights, couple: 3 Ubud and 3 Uluwatu, as our Bali honeymoon does.
7 nights, family: 3 Ubud and 4 Nusa Dua, as our Bali family route does.
Avoid a third move unless you accept more packing and driving.
Mistakes to avoid
Staying airport-side for a longer trip just to save travel time. It suits four nights; over a week, a second, quieter base usually pays off.
Planning a Nusa Penida day trip without a spare day for weather and sea conditions.
Splitting five nights across three bases.
Assuming a villa includes breakfast, a driver or a private pool. Check the exact listing.
Before you book
Rules change, so confirm these on the official sites before you travel (checked 24 October 2026).
Tourist levy: foreign visitors pay IDR 150,000 per person, once, on the official Love Bali portal.
Visa: Indian passport holders are eligible for visa on arrival or an e-VOA, typically for 30 days and extendable once. Our Indonesia guide explains the process.
Which area is best for a Bali honeymoon?
Ubud plus Uluwatu is the pairing our honeymoon package uses: greenery first, then the sea. Seminyak is the alternative if you want more dining and nightlife.
Which area is best for a family with young children?
Nusa Dua or Sanur, where Indonesia Travel notes calmer water. Our family route uses Ubud and Nusa Dua.
Is Ubud or Seminyak better for a first visit?
Indonesia Travel suggests both, with Kuta: Ubud for culture and terraces, Seminyak for dining. Many first trips use more than one base.
