Italy strike alert: Rome airport security and easyJet crews out on Sunday 13 September

Update — 16 October 2026: Pisa and Florence airports on 30 October, Milan and Venice transport on 13 November

Italy’s strike register now also lists a 24-hour strike by ground staff at Pisa and Florence airports on Friday 30 October, the same day as the national general strike, and 24-hour strikes on Friday 13 November at ATM, which runs Milan’s metro, trams and buses, and at ATVO, which runs the buses between Venice Marco Polo airport, Piazzale Roma and Mestre. The Venice airport security strike on 22 November is still listed. We read the register on 16 October; a listed strike can still be revoked, so check again before you travel.

Update — 12 October 2026: Venice strike is on 22 November, and a general strike on 30 October

Two points in our 25 September update are out of date. The 24-hour strike by security staff at Venice Marco Polo airport is listed on the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport register for Sunday 22 November, not Friday 16 October. And the register now lists a national general strike on Friday 30 October, called by the USB union, which for trains runs from 21:00 on Thursday 29 October to 20:59 on Friday 30 October; we had written that no national rail strike was listed for October.

Friday 16 October still carries a 24-hour national strike by easyJet’s flying staff (00:00–23:59). The register also lists, for Sunday 22 November, a 24-hour strike by air traffic control staff at Milan Malpensa, and a national rail-sector strike from 21:00 on Friday 20 November to 20:00 on Saturday 21 November. The 6 November strike at Bari and the national air traffic control strike on 21 November (both 13:00–17:00) remain listed as we reported.

We read the register on 12 October. A listed strike can still be revoked or rescheduled at short notice, so check the register and your airline or rail operator before you travel. Our updates of 25 and 17 September and the original report of 1 September follow unchanged.

Update — 25 September 2026: new strikes on 6 and 21 November, and Naples and Venice added

Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport strike register, updated on 25 September, now lists these air-transport actions. Wednesday 30 September: ENAV and Techno Sky staff (air traffic control and its maintenance) strike nationally from 13:00 to 17:00, called by UILT-UIL, with local ENAV actions at Bologna, Bari, Rome, Milan Linate and — newly listed — Naples. Moveo reported on 22 September that the 30 September strike is confirmed. Friday 16 October: easyJet flight crew strike nationally for 24 hours (USB Lavoro Privato), and security staff at Venice airport strike for 24 hours (OST FISASCAT-CISL).

Two new dates have been added since our last update: a four-hour ENAV strike at Bari on Friday 6 November (13:00–17:00, RSA FAST-CONFSAL), and a national ENAV air traffic control strike on Saturday 21 November (13:00–17:00, FILT-CGIL and UGL-TA). The register lists no national rail strike in late September or October. Strikes are sometimes revoked or rescheduled, so check the register and your airline in the days before.

Update — 17 September 2026: this strike day has passed; the next ones are listed

The strikes described below were scheduled for Sunday 13 September and that date has passed. Moveo, Telepass’s travel news service, reported on the day that they were under way: the ADR Security stoppage at Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino ran from 00:00 to 24:00, and the easyJet crew strike applied nationally for the whole day. Guaranteed flights operated in the protected windows of 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00. We have not found a published count of cancellations.

A correction. We wrote that Alghero and Olbia had 24-hour strikes. Moveo’s report of 13 September lists the disruption at Alghero, Olbia and Cagliari in the 11:00–15:00 window. It also says easyJet’s crew strike was limited to 11:00–15:00 at Cagliari. The ministry register no longer shows past strikes, so we cannot re-check the original entries. Treat the Sardinian durations below as uncertain.

What is on the register now. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport register, updated on 17 September, lists two air-transport actions that matter to travellers. On Wednesday 30 September, ENAV and Techno Sky staff, who run and maintain Italian air traffic control, strike nationally from 13:00 to 17:00, called by UILT-UIL, with local actions at Rome, Milan Linate, Bologna and Bari. On Friday 16 October, easyJet flight crew strike nationally for 24 hours (00:00–23:59), called by USB Lavoro Privato. Strikes are sometimes revoked or rescheduled, so check the register and your airline in the days before.

What it means: an afternoon air traffic control strike on 30 September can delay or cancel flights well beyond Italy’s own airlines, including some connections to long-haul departures. If your Italy itinerary has a domestic or intra-European flight on either date, favour a morning departure or a train between Rome, Florence and Milan. The original report of 1 September follows unchanged.

What is on the register (report of 1 September)

Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport publishes every proclaimed transport strike. For Sunday 13 September 2026 the register lists, in air transport: a 24-hour strike (00:00 to 24:00) by staff of ADR Security at Rome’s Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, called by FAST-CONFSAL; a 24-hour strike (00:00 to 23:59) by easyJet Airlines Limited flight crew, called by USB Lavoro Privato and proclaimed on 31 August; and a four-hour action (11:00 to 15:00) by Aviation Services staff at the two Rome airports.

Outside Rome, the same day carries four-hour strikes (11:00 to 15:00) at Pisa and Florence airports (Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta staff) and at Cagliari (SOGAER group), a further 13:00 to 17:00 action at Cagliari, and 24-hour strikes at Alghero (SOGEAAL) and Olbia (GEASAR). A separate four-hour strike by Poste Air Cargo flight crew is listed for 11 September (00:00 to 04:00) and does not affect passenger flights.

What it means for travellers in Italy that weekend

The security strike is the one to plan around: ADR Security runs the screening lanes at Fiumicino, the main gateway for Indian arrivals in Italy. Italian law protects certain flights during air-transport strikes, and airlines usually publish the guaranteed list a day or two before, so expect a reduced timetable rather than a shutdown. Arrive earlier than usual for a Sunday departure from Rome, and if you are flying easyJet within Italy or Europe on 13 September, watch for a rebooking notice.

Strikes in Italy are sometimes revoked at short notice; the ministry register is the authoritative source and shows the current status of each action. If your Italy itinerary has an internal flight on 13 September, a train is the reliable alternative between Rome, Florence and Pisa.
