- Murudeshwar station is on the Konkan Railway, in the town, with services between Goa and Mangaluru.
- Mangaluru (IXE) is about 160 km and Goa about 200 km.
- The coastal highway runs through, and buses are frequent.
- Gokarna is about 70 km north, Udupi about 100 km south — both transfers rather than day trips.
Getting around
- The town is small and the headland is walkable from most accommodation.
- Autos handle anything further.
- JOG FALLS IS ABOUT 85 KM INLAND through ghat road — roughly two and a half hours each way, and we refuse it as a day trip. It is an en-route stop when you are driving inland anyway.

An old temple and a very modern statue, on the same rock.
What shapes it
- The temple belongs to the Atmalinga tradition shared with Gokarna — a fragment of the linga is held to have fallen here, which is why there is a temple on this headland at all.
- The statue and the gopura are recent, built with private patronage in the modern era, and they are the reason the town is on any itinerary.
- That combination is worth noticing rather than glossing: an ancient site and a contemporary monument, next to each other, both taken seriously by the people who come.
- It is a domestic pilgrimage destination first and a foreign-visitor one a distant second, which shapes the food, the accommodation and the atmosphere.

- Coastal Karnataka cooking — fish curry, rice, and the coconut-forward register of this stretch.
- The food is simple and geared to pilgrims, not to visitors, which is honest rather than a complaint.

- IT HAS ALSO BEEN USED AS A NAVAL FIRING RANGE, and access has been restricted for that reason at various points. That is not a rumour to work around; it is a constraint on when anyone can go at all.
- DIVING THERE IS ENTIRELY OPERATOR-DEPENDENT AND SEA-STATE DEPENDENT. It does not run in the monsoon, it stops in rough water, and it is subject to permissions that change.
