On the backwaters
- A houseboat night — board early afternoon, moor overnight, disembark next morning
- A shikara canoe through the narrow canals a houseboat cannot enter — the better trip for seeing village life
- Public ferry to Kottayam, a few hours across Vembanad for almost nothing
On land
- Marari beach, 30 minutes north, quiet and largely undeveloped
- The coir museum and the working coir villages behind the town
- Alappuzha lighthouse and the pier
If your timing is right
- The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race on Punnamada lake, usually August — over a hundred rowers per boat
- Smaller village boat races through the monsoon months

Getting to and around Alleppey

Arriving
- Kochi (COK) is the nearest airport, about 1.5 hrs by road
- Alappuzha station sits on the coastal line with services from Ernakulam and Trivandrum
- The drive from Kochi is flat and straightforward — no ghat roads
Getting around
- Houseboats and shikaras are the point; both are booked locally or through your hotel
- Autos cover the town, which is small
- Public ferries run scheduled routes across the lake and cost very little
- A car is only needed for Marari or onward travel

Booking a houseboat
- Ask whether the boat MOORS overnight or runs its engine — the difference between quiet and not
- One night is enough; a second adds cost without adding much
- Boats do not travel after dark, by regulation
- Air-conditioning usually runs only at night on generator
Who it suits
- Excellent for couples and families — children generally love the boat
- Good for older travellers: no walking, and you are seated throughout
- Solo travellers may find a private houseboat poor value; shikaras and homestays work better
- Not for anyone wanting nightlife or sightseeing volume
