Worth knowing
- The bird sanctuary is worthwhile November to February and thin outside that window
- This is open lake, not canals — for narrow-canal backwaters go to Alleppey
- Resorts are spread out with little between them; there is no town to walk to
- Mosquitoes are present at dusk near the water

- The strongest honeymoon option in Kerala — quiet, lakefront and unhurried
- Excellent for older travellers: flat, short distances, nothing strenuous
- Good for families wanting rest rather than activity
- Poor for solo budget travellers and anyone wanting nightlife or things to see

Alleppey for the houseboat journey and the canal network; Kumarakom to stay put on open lake in a better resort. Alleppey is busier and cheaper with far more choice. Many itineraries do a houseboat night from Alleppey and then two quiet nights at Kumarakom, which works well.
Two is usual — one to arrive and see the lake, one for the bird sanctuary and a canoe. If you have come for an Ayurvedic programme, that is a different trip entirely and needs seven nights at minimum.
It is probably the strongest honeymoon base in Kerala. Lakefront rooms, short transfers, genuine quiet and the best resort standard in the state. The trade-off is that there is very little to do, which suits some couples and not others.
November to February, when migratory species are present. Go at dawn. Outside that window the sanctuary is pleasant but sparse, and it would be misleading to present it as a year-round highlight.
It is the priciest backwater destination in Kerala, because the inventory is weighted towards resorts rather than budget stays. Homestays exist inland and are far cheaper. Alleppey offers much more at the lower end.
Honestly, not much — the bird sanctuary, canoe trips and the polder villages, and that is close to the whole list. There is no town centre, no market street and no nightlife. That emptiness is the reason people choose it.
Very. Everything is flat, transfers are short, boats are boarded from fixed jetties, and resorts are set up for unhurried stays. It is among the easiest destinations in Kerala for limited mobility.
