Overview

Granite hills shared by leopards and villages

Jawai is a landscape of rounded granite hills around the Jawai dam in the Sumerpur area of Pali district, Rajasthan. Leopards live on the hills and among the caves and boulders, close to farming villages and the herds of the Rabari, a pastoral community. That closeness is what makes the place unusual, and it is also why it has become the subject of rules. The area includes the Jawai Dam Leopard Conservation Reserve, notified in 2013, and a second Reserve-II notified in 2018, according to court records. In 2026 the Rajasthan High Court heard a public interest case on construction and tourism, and in early September 2026 it declared a one-kilometre interim regulatory zone around the notified boundary and asked for a tourism code to be finalised. Earlier orders that year barred night safaris and drones, according to reports. A man was killed by a leopard near the dam in March 2025. This page sets out what is known and what to check before you plan.

Experiences

What a stay here holds

A stay at Jawai is about landscape and community, with wildlife outings that are now regulated.

🐆 Leopard country

  • Leopards live on the granite hills near villages, and sightings are never guaranteed
  • The Rajasthan High Court has restrained unregulated tourism and barred night safaris and drones, according to reports
  • Ask your stay how its outings are organised and whether they follow the current rules and the state tourism code

🏞️ The dam and the hills

  • The Jawai dam and the lake around it are the focus of the landscape
  • The granite hills rise out of fields and scrub, and are best seen from a distance and from a vehicle
  • Keep to marked tracks and follow the guidance of your guide

🐐 Village and herding life

  • The Rabari are a pastoral community whose herds share the land with the leopards
  • Ask before photographing people or animals, and do not enter private land without permission
  • The court order says grazing and customary livelihoods are not to be treated as prohibited merely for lying inside the regulatory zone, subject to the required permissions

Travel Intelligence

What to know before you go

Four points shape a stay at Jawai.

Tourism is governed by court ordersRules are changing

The Rajasthan High Court disposed of a public interest case in early September 2026 by declaring a one-kilometre interim regulatory zone around the notified boundary, continuing earlier directions of 23 March and 4 April 2026 and the state's draft code, and asking a Jawai Safari and Eco-Tourism Coordination Committee to finalise the code. Reports say new tourism licences are restrained. Check the position with the Rajasthan Forest Department before you plan.

Sightings are never guaranteedNo promise

A court order bars marketing that guarantees leopard sightings, and no page can promise one. The leopards are wild animals that range over a large area.

Conflict has happenedFollow local guidance

A man was killed by a leopard near the Jawai dam in March 2025, according to PTI, and some tourism pages that say no conflict has ever been recorded are wrong. Treat the landscape as wild country, do not approach any animal and follow the guidance of your stay and the forest staff.

Figures differ between sourcesArea and numbers unconfirmed

Pages give different notification dates, areas and leopard counts. We give no area and no count, because sources conflict and we found no official figure.

Where to Stay

Where to base yourself

Stays around Jawai are camps and small hotels in the villages and on the hills. We do not name properties.

Camps and lodges

  • Camps and lodges stand among the hills and fields around the dam
  • Ask what safari arrangements are included and whether they follow the court-ordered rules
  • Be cautious of any stay that promises a guaranteed sighting, since a court order bars that kind of marketing

In the villages

  • Simpler stays are available in the villages around the dam
  • Check the distance to the hills and the road after dark
  • Ask about local guidance on moving around at dusk and at night

If you are combining it with Udaipur or Jodhpur

  • Jawai can be paired with Udaipur or Jodhpur, which are the nearest airports
  • One resort page puts the road distance at about 100 km from the Udaipur side and about 156 km from Jodhpur
  • Allow a margin for the drive on both ends
Practical

Practical notes

A few details that keep a stay simple.

Before you book

  • Check the current rules with the Rajasthan Forest Department
  • Avoid any offer that promises a guaranteed sighting
  • Read the cancellation terms

In leopard country

  • Follow the guide at all times and do not leave the vehicle where told not to
  • Do not approach or follow any animal
  • Take local advice about moving around at dusk and after dark

What to carry

  • Muted colours, sun protection, a hat and water
  • Binoculars if you have them
  • Some cash, as signal can be patchy
