Indian Museum
The Indian Museum was founded on 2 February 1814, which makes it the ninth oldest museum in the world and the oldest in Asia — and, by the size of its collection, the largest on the continent. Its founder curator was Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist who had been captured at Serampore and released, and who wrote to the Asiatic Society proposing it. The present building on Chowringhee, now Jawaharlal Nehru Road, was completed in 1875 to a design by W. L. Granville. Inside are 35 galleries in six sections — Indian art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology and economic botany — which is a range no other museum in the country attempts. It is a nineteenth-century museum and it still feels like one; that is either the appeal or the objection.

- The colonnades and stairwells, which are as much of the experience as the cases.
Getting there
It stands on Chowringhee at the top of Park Street, which is about as central as Kolkata gets.
By metro and road
- The city metro has a station within a short walk on the same road.
- Taxis and app cabs reach the entrance directly; the road is busy through the middle of the day.
- It is an easy walk from Park Street and from the northern end of the Maidan.
Best time
Indoors, so the season matters less than the day.
When to go
- Weekday mornings are the quietest; weekends and school holidays fill the sculpture galleries.
- It is a good wet-weather or hot-afternoon option, which is when most of the city is not.
- Check the weekly closing day before building a day around it.
