When to visit West Bengal
One clear season, one spectacular but crowded festival window, and a monsoon that genuinely disrupts the hills.
Oct – MarThe season across all three regions. Clear Himalayan views are best from October to December.
Sep – OctDurga Puja. Extraordinary and completely full — hotels and trains book out months ahead. Lunar-dated, so confirm the year.
Jun – SepMonsoon. Heavy in the hills, with landslides closing the Darjeeling road at short notice. The Sundarbans are at their greenest but boats are limited.
Apr – MayHot and humid in Kolkata and the delta. The hills stay pleasant, which is why Darjeeling fills with domestic travellers.
Getting around
How to travel West Bengal
Kolkata is the hub and everything radiates from it. This is a state where rail is genuinely strong and the metro is actually useful.
By air
- Kolkata (CCU) is a major international gateway and the arrival point for almost every trip.
- Bagdogra (IXB) serves Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim — about an hour by air from Kolkata, then three to four by road uphill.
By rail
- Howrah and Sealdah are two of the busiest stations in India, with services nationwide.
- Overnight trains to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) for the hills are the classic approach and save a day.
- The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage listing — a narrow-gauge experience, not a way of getting anywhere quickly.
- Vande Bharat runs Howrah–NJP, which is the fastest surface route to the hills.
By road
- A car with a driver for the Sundarbans transfer and the hill roads; Kolkata itself does not need one.
- NJP/Bagdogra to Darjeeling is about 3–4 hrs on a winding hill road that slows sharply in rain.
- Kolkata to the Sundarbans jetties is about 3 hrs, then a boat — allow the whole day.
On the water
- The Sundarbans are travelled entirely by boat; day boats and overnight vessels both operate from the jetties.
- Ganges river cruises between Kolkata and Varanasi are a genuine product on this stretch, unlike ocean cruising from Indian ports.
- Hooghly ferries in Kolkata are cheap, quick and the pleasant way to cross to Howrah.

Victoria Memorial, the old quarter, College Street and Kumartuli where the Durga idols are made.
Nights 4–5
Sundarbans
Drive and boat south. One or two nights on a vessel or at a lodge. Expect mangroves and birds rather than tigers.
Nights 6–8
Darjeeling
Fly or take the overnight train to NJP. Tiger Hill at dawn, a tea estate, and a stretch of the toy train.
Optional
Kalimpong or Shantiniketan
Two more nights — Kalimpong for quiet hills, Shantiniketan for Tagore’s campus town.

Not for the state generally — Indian travellers need only photo ID. The Sundarbans require a park permit and a registered boat and guide, arranged through your operator, and that is a park booking rather than a travel permit. Areas near the Bangladesh border are restricted regardless of nationality.
Almost certainly not, and any operator promising one is not being straight with you. The mangrove is dense, tigers are genuinely elusive there, and sightings are rare even for people who go repeatedly. Go for the delta landscape, the birdlife and the boat journey.
Eight to twelve nights for all three regions. Kolkata alone rewards three or four. Because nothing connects directly, treat it as three legs from a Kolkata hub rather than a loop.
It falls in September or October on the lunar calendar, so the dates move each year. It is one of the great urban festivals anywhere and worth seeing deliberately — but the city is at capacity, hotels and trains sell out months ahead, and moving around is slow. Either commit to it or avoid it.
